hy... i have a problem with my new dell 9300... i love this machine... but something seems to be wrong with the screen... (got WXGA+, non glossy type, think it's LG).
no dead pixel,
no light leakage,
but, if i read some black text on white background, my eyes start to hurt after a time. doesn't happen, when i watch a DVD or play a game*.
now i've remarked something funny. white an greyish color, especially if it's all over the sreen, seems to shimmer. it's quite difficult to explain, but it looks weird...
it's like the screen would be wet , or like the small pixels would wander around. but i see this effekt only on bright colors, like white or brighter grey. not only that it distracts me, it hurts my eyes, like i am feeling my eyes getting sleepier and sleepier....
my old latitude (200Mhz MMX) doesn't have to have this effect. but maybe it has to do with resolution (old lappie: 1024x768, 9300: 1440x900 = double number of pixels). I used 4 years long a 19" CRT @ 100hz, everything fine, thight, that a LCD would let my eyes relax, but it's quite the opposite...
quite nasty...
* well you can see it in movies/games if you have a bright source, but only if you concentrate. while reading a txt file it's quite more apparent!

that shimmer thing you see is what they call "sparkles". not much you can do about it.
you should be able to fix the text with this. http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx -
then i'll have to send the notebook back to dell
-
oh yea all dell's have that "sparkle" effect to it. at first when i got the 19in monitor for my desktop i couldnt adjust to it. it hurted my eyes. but i'm sorta used to that now and i'm used to my laptop. actually the sparkle effect gives pictures/graphics a better look to it.
-
Odd... My brand new 6000D doesn't have that effect... and if it hurts your eyes that bad, just turn down the brightness (Fn+uparrow/downarrow)
-
Look for 9300 screen talks, there are lots of complains about it, but anyway, I've returned mine as well, could not live with grey screen and two dimentional "reading experience". Your eyes hurt because you have to "catch" the letters which apear a little higher than the backgrounds which strains your eye focus.

yeah seems like i have an LG. LP0000 ... i mean no dead pixels, no lightleaking.. but aww...
will they send me a new screen without problems? i have only 1 year guarantee...
edit: how can i look if it's a LG? software?! -
-
i only see this:
1 F8997 SUB-ASSEMBLY, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, VERTICAL ASSEMBLY, 17WX+, SULLIVAN/GILBERT, EUROPEAN MANUFACTURING FACILITY
from:
with the brightness method... well from 2-3 there's a small ingnificant change in brightness, but almost nil.
will they send me new lcd and i have to install it, or will they personally replace it?
does dell fee any charges if i return the laptop? -
your panel is an LG panel
-
so... call dell and ask for a replacement?
-
yes call them, they should do something, if they say no see if you can return it free of charge. -
will call them, hope the support here in germany is as good as in the states...
say... is the samsung really a big difference? lg vs. samsung i mean.
cause i love this notebook, only the screen sucks...
my g6800 runs perfectly @ 366Mhz/750Mhz , that makes 4400pts in 3dmark05 and 10100pts in 3dmark03. and the core gets only up to 66°C. -
Yes, samsung i heard is very better. I even have a samsung phone with screen and it is outstanding!
-
people have been arguing about that for some time now. some hate the lg and some hate the samsung. ive seen both and personally it really doesnt matter to me, as long as it doesnt have any dead pixals or really bad light leakage.
my m170 screen is still getting replaced by dell right now for bad light leakage. the replacement might be better, might not, no guaranty. its all up to you. -
called technical support... they said they can't replace the screen, if it's functional, means it has no problems..
so i called the support, to return the laptop! i have time until wednesday next week to decide wheter to keep the notebook or give it back! -
Call again and talk with another rep. They replace the screens all the time
-
For those who exchanged the screens, What was the phone number you use to call in the States? How was the process of exchanging the screens? Did you do it yourself or did you send in your laptop? Thanks for reading
