I know the thrust of the 9300 is graphics performance and the Video. But is the keyboard the typcial Dell junk or have they firmed it up any? I am not expecting a Thinkpad keyboard but the past Dells are like typing on mushy cardboard. Why don't they put SOME R&D into keyboards over at Dell? Having a great keyboard is a fantastic selling point. Oh and do any of you know if the keyboard is user replaceable? I usually take them off and shim them up to get the right firm "feel".
Thanks for the help

Yes, not a thinkpad, but very firm indeed. And important keys are the correct size.

It would have been nice to have a bigger keyboard on the 9300...

So far the keyboard seems fine to me, no complaints asides the size..

Keyboard is quite serviceable...decent feel. Wish it was bigger. Dell wasted valuable realestate. Had Sony A-series and it's keyboard is the example Dell should emulate. Lighter, yet positive keys. Travel closer to desktop.

On other thing. I'm a touch typer and fly. Every once in a while my finger will catch the sharp edge of the keys on the 9300 keyboard. I'm afraid I'm going to rip one off.

There is the Alps pointing device program that runs in the system tray. you may be able to disable the touchpad from there. I 'm not sure, i haven't messed with it since I don't use the touchpad.
you might google for:
Alps Pointing-device Driver control panel

i'll say one thing, the base of the notebook is large and the keyboard has a very tight feel to it. much improved over the past models. I haven't logged a ton of hours yet on my 9300 ( just got the CD's sent to me for the O/S,Drivers,apps - they forgot to include in my shipment ) but i have yet to touch the pad while typing. There is p l e n t y of space to avoid the touch pad, and i tend to "fatfinger" the keys a lot - what i mean is mistyping -
I just used the touchpad now, and it not to so sensitive that it would blow the cursor off the active window. if I were you, i wouldn't sweat it. its a great notebook and worth the money IMHO.
I use it for mostly surfing and some heavy programming/administration. I run lots of windows ( xwindows / dos / telnet / ide's etc ) and it's been great so far. i'm impressed by how quiet and cool it runs.
i just burned 2 large cd's and the entire machine is cool as can be!

oops, forgot to mention
yes I use a USB mouse 99% of the time. never liked touchpad/pointer and only use it when on a plane or outside somewhere.
there is plenty of palm/handspace under the keyboard that i don't come close to the touchpad. I keep my thumbs elevated naturally - they would be the closest thing to it ;)

if you are resting your palms on the top of the machine, the 9300 is great because there is a lot of room for that.
i just reinstalled XP and reformatted my drive clean. I reclaimed about 8 gigs of space. The Alps software is not installed anymore, however he cursor will still move if the touchpad is touched.
I'm sure you could go into the device mgr and disable it somehow or remove the drivers. XP just installs it naturally as plug 'n play.
My old laptop was a 14" 600m Dell, and it was an awesome machine. This one is quite bigger.
As i sit naturally at the machine and typing, the edges of my hands just hover over top the upper top corners of the touch pad square, so there is lots of room.
ONe options ( since there are 6 usb's ( which is AWESOME ) ) is to get a keyboard and plug it in. But I really don't think you'll have an issue with it.
I waited over 2 weeks for my 9300, and it was well worth it.

One thing I forgot to add is that you can also disable the touch pad buttons so that they have no functions associated to them when you click on them.

Hi heartofgold,

I checked windows device manager and you cannot disable the touch pad with the alps driver installed, maybe someone can chime in and say if its possible or not with just the windows default driver...

I tried modifying some settings with the alps driver, set the "tapping" to off and the touch sensitivity to the lowest. I have a heavy gauge silver bracelet that I constantly wear as well and dragging it over the touch pad with sensitivity at lowest does not move it, at medium sensitivity it moves it only slightly but your bracelet has to hit the touchpad consideraly hard as in purposely.

Also as others have mentionned, there is plenty of room between the space bar and top of touch pad (1" to 1-1/4") roughly I didnt measure. If you have your hands layed out on the palm wrest with fingers in position to type and your thumbs resting on that 1" or so of clearance I think you should be ok, also the touchpad seems to be recessed a little bit deeper than the touchpads I saw on other laptops.

All in all im very satisfied. hope this helps you more.

It is a little off topic but I got the internal bluetooth and bought a Microsoft bluetooth ouse. They work pretty well with each other and the nice thing is you don't need a dongle to talk to the mouse it is in the computer.

If I have any complaint about the keyboard it is that the computer is so big that when I rest my arm on it to type my watch rubs the case. I am going to get something to put on it so I don't rub offf the case of my brand new computer! Otherwise so far I am pretty happy.

Heart of Gold- 12 hours of internet surfing a day! I thought I was bad answering blogs and stuff, me being the political animal that I am. Screw the touchpad make sure you like the screen! For the price that you are paying for the 9300 it will probably be just fine for you, but know that it is probably nowhere near as good as the Sony A series.

Just a thought before that Karma gets me!

The touch pad is nicely done and not sensitive to accidental touches and jewelry touching it.

However, I would almost like to see the keyboard lower, with the touch pad above it (along with ten key somewhere), since it is not used as much. This would make typing a lot more comfortable and natural. There's a lot of wasted space between the bottom of the keyboard and the bottom of the case. Oh well.

LOVE IT ANYWAY!

Don't feel bad, mine was over $1800 once tax was added!

I most say its a pretty nice keyboard. I enjoy the feel very much, not cheap but the keys still have that soft laptop touch too them. My only problem is that its possible to get your finger under a key while typing. Not sure if all of you have experienced this but i have once, clipped a key and popped it off! On occasion, i clip under a key, its more of just an annoyance.

Also, I got my system during the Small Business coupon for 35% off with only 1 year mail in warranty service. Going from 3 year on-site to 1 year mail-in saved me 350 bucks! Came to under 1900 with tax and free shipping! 500 dollars cheaper than what i had bought my I9200 for! Thats why it went back! [ :D]

quote:
I can't see the post while I'm writing on who was sending back their 9300 to get the extra $350 or something off. I think it was Oracledba. If I have the wrong name, who ever posted it please forgive me. My question is with Dell's 21 day garantee, do you have to pay for the return shipping ??? I was told since there was no shipping originally that there is no cost for shipping it back. I was also told that Dell does not send a pre paid shipping label. So it doesn't make sense. Someone has to pay. In your situation did you have to pay (I assume you didn't because it was a lower price on a PC you had for a few days.)

You would think Dell would just credit you back the way any retail store has too by law when the price has changed within 3 week period of time or something. Dell has a 100% guarantee within 1 month's time.
Yes, I had to pay for shipping, however I will go through my business to do it, and that will save me a bundle.
I've had to return stuff to Dell in the past and I admit,it is a real pain. They don't credit you back for 30 days, and you hang in limbo and wonder if they even processed the return.
One time I was going to return some accessories that I bought from Dell, and a manager came on the line ( surprised me ) and just gave me the credit. I was hoping for the same, but they were happy enough to take it back with no issue.
I reformatted the drive, and you would think it would go to Dell Outlet now.
H.O.G I think you are worrying too much. I had the 3 yr w/ 3 yr accidental on my last Dell, and I had no issues. I decided that it was pure profit margin for Dell. I buy a new computer every 1 - 2 years so it really only needs to be covered for a year for basic failure.
I think if you just decide, you will feel better - then let it go. YOu can always change your warranty options later, without having to send anything back.
best regards

Now that i think about it, the reason I had to pay ( and not get a UPS return label ) is because i'm returning it due to a non system-fault type reason. If I was returning it because it had a bad monitor, or broken case or something, they would pay for the return shipping. I've asked them this question before.
and I stand corrected, it is a 21 day return, not a 30 day. Thanks.
This stinks having to wait another 2 weeks but its worth the money.
I put in the order last night.

Glad it helped. I just paid $45 to send my laptop back to Dell, but i'm still saving $300 on the unit. kinda mad I didn't push for free shipping, but I was in a moment of happiness knowing I was going to save $300, and upgrade my hard drive at the same time.
I just got the basic 1 year mail in service warranty (the standard warranty)

Yes, you would have saved the shipping cost if you pushed . $300 difference is huge and worth paying the shipping , so who cares! You helped me alot.[:)] I will post when ever I receive my order. I'm excited again and can't wait. I pray there wont be any problems with the unit itself.

Well one thing i forgot to note is that i ordered the deluxe nylon bag which is somewhere around that price. i asked if I needed to return it and they said to go ahead and keep it. I assume it was comp'ed for my trouble - so maybe it all worked out anyway .... I decided to take it to a UPS store, because I didn't want to chance an employee stealing the box - since it says "DELL" all over it,it screams 'laptop'. Worth my piece of mind to be a bit more careful and take it somewhere ...

I know you made a great choice, i miss mine already. I'm too tired to check the order status - i'll just wait for it.

heartofgold, sorry for not getting back to you quickly, work and school is m entire monday. Anyway, yes i did get my finger under the key and pop it off. It snapped right back on, but i was kind of shocked. I do have a very fast type so that could be the problem, or the fact that i barely lift my fingers off the keyboard while hitting other letters. Just so you know, this has only happend once, and i have only "clipped" a few other keys a couple of times. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Just be more careful because your nails could easily pop these keys.

Also heart, not to dwell into your life, but are you on the computer so much for work?

Oracledba, who did you ship your system back through??? When i sent my I9200 back, i went through UPS, sending it to a business( hence Dell) and it cost me 17.50! I also sent my I9200 back to get a I9300 for 400 bucks cheaper and about 3 times as fast in gaming benchmarks.

I went through a UPS store a.k.a a pack and ship mom and pop store. I knew whatever they were going to charge me was about 2x the actual price, since I know the shipping rates. I insured the package for $2300 ( my original purchase price ). I know i know i paid too much for shipping, but I don't trust some of the employees -we've had things "disappear", and it was worth the extra 20 bucks for the piece of mind ( at least thats what I tell myself ). I know I could have saved some more buck just going with the standard RAM that comes with the machine, but I didn't see any 1 gig stick on crucial.com. I've had great experience with the Micron memory and Dell laptops, I didn't want to settle for something less. Good deal with returning your 9200 for the 9300. I didn't even realize the xps 2 came with the 6800 ultra, I thought the xps2 and the 9300 were essentially the same if configured equally -

Glad I could be of help. I miss my 9300 - i have a lot of work to do and i have to use my latitude D600. it's just not the same and this one gets hot. my ship date is 4/13 on the 9300, and i did the 3-5 day ship. Usually it takes 3 days when they ship it. I know you will be very happy with it, a comparable machine costs well into the 2,000's and even 3,000+ or more for less performance.
I hope they remember to ship me out the O/S and Drivers disks, I made a copy of the drivers just in case before I sent it back to them. But they were very good at sending replacement disks to me.

H.O.G i am male, 38yrs. i've been in IT for a while, I do mostly database administration, oracle primarily. I run a lot of db's locally on my machines and do development on them as well. So I run db's, app servers, development tools and multiple console windows at the same time. The dothans have worked very well for me while keeping things portable. While i don't game, I have to do performance tuning and analysis, so i need something that can really cook. i do a lot of web surfing, and I plan on doing some video editing very soon with a new camcorder we just bought.
Dell didn't ship my OS cd's with me and they told me the same story about the restore partition on my hard drive, and I asked them if the restore image was available on a DVD instead of on my hard drive. i also asked them for the restore software on cd. They said it was a program that was installed ( pre loaded ) and an image on a partition. I told them that really didn't do me any good if the drive fails or if I upgrade to a new drive. They really didn't have an answer for me. The restore partition really is a joke, because you have an image that is essentially "vanilla" with none of your files - so if you lose files you can't get them back, and if the drive blows up, the image is useless. they sent me the cd's in 2 shipments.
the karma must have been in my favor, because I sent back my XP media center cd ( which is really xp pro ) and I wish I could have kept it, and mysteriously, another showed up today from Dell...good karma for being honest about my return. I did burn the entire contents of the C :Dell folder to a cdrom so I have all the drivers ( they are uncompressed install programs sitting in folders ). That's just a practice of mine from database work and the positive power of negative thinking - i knew I would need them someday...

One thing I forgot to mention, is that this is the first Dell machine i have received that did not come with printed documentation. i asked them about it, and i was told the docs are online, which they are, and i burned those .pdf's to a cdrom along with the drivers.
I really wish the docs came in printed form, I like to have them to read and take with me if I need the info at the store for some reason ....[ :(!]

Sony doesnt send restore either but Fujitsu does. I think it is a useless way to take up 5 gig (or more) of precious hard drive space. I could save more useless emails and bad digital pics in that 5 gig!

I just got my 9300 and it is just what i wanted so far i like it.

It did not come with a driver cd or OS disc so I called DELL and they are supposed to be sending them 2 me. they tried to tell me i didn't need them because it can be restored to its OEM on boot up by pressing (ALT+F11) i think.. But when i stated that if i upgraded the HD down the road i would need these he had no problem sending me out what i asked for..

hope this helps

Gargoyle,
A quick response from me. Of coarse your suggestion helped. What really will help is to hear what you have to say in more detail about the 9300.

It is a cheap trick on Dells end to leave these CD's/Disks out of the order. It's ridiculous and from things going on inside my head, I can think of many reasons that in the long run probably would save Dell time/money to send them from the start.

Did you burn backups like Oracledba did? I like this idea. It sounds safe/preventative and for peace of mind I'm going to do the same when I get my 9300.

I bought a copy of Nero for the 9300, since Dell didn't send me the cd's for the freebie burner programs ( Roxio ? ) and the DVD decoder/player.
I downloaded the 30 free trial NVidia DVD decoder since it has the hooks into the nvidia 6800 card.
So ... if you request the CD's from Dell, make sure they understand that you need the DVD decoder and freebie Burner as well. I believe both are limited in the functionality the provide ...
My 9300 should show up around 4/15 or so - can't wait.

I'm 36 ,missing out on life now and who knows how long. The computer is my lifeline but all this seems to be overwhelming for me to deal with...especially when Dell could have prevented a majority of these issues!

H.O.G I don't want to drag your personal issues out onto this board, but i'm interested in hearing what's going on with you. Feel free to email me at: [email protected]

Oracledba,
I haven't forgotton about your kind offer/request! I'm horrible at writing. I actually truly dread emailing. On the phone, face to face I'm excellent at communicating. I think maybe you might have seen a few selected posts of mine the last day or two. Not doing so good I guess! I didn't want to come back after a situation early this morning on the board. I received so many posts back that I decided to brave coming to a place I'm not comfortable with anymore!

I will try! Thank you ![:)][:)][:)]

I am sorry, all the quotes lost my original post LOL. Anyway - no problem !
I just wanted to say that I got my Dell refund notice today for the full amount of my return! so that verified that I got the dlx nylon case for free. I'm happy it was processed so quickly, i thought it would take over a month to get any type of credit.
My ship date has been updated ( to receive the new 9300 ) is next week . Arghgh. Another week to wait - and I have TONS of work to do !

I could have used your help concerning the DVD decoder on my Desktop an a few other things. That's one of the reasons I had decided yesterday to take you up on your offer. The main reason is "you asked" until those last to posts where I get the impression you didn't want me to anymore.

Like I said in the previous post, I'm not going to impose or go where I'm not wanted. I'm don't want to come off rude or anything negative. No matter what do not read into anything I said as being a put down.

You're going to have to come straight out and ask like you originally did to make me feel comfortable. I had already decided and wrote you yesterday that I would be taking you up on your offer.

It's possible after you read my recent posts that you see I've been upset ,sensitive for appropriate and not good enough reasons. With my health the way it is , some of my behavior is directly related with no control over it. The other is still due to my health situation and that I'm plain miserable (physically/emotionally), scared and don't really have a real excuse. I can keep it to myself on the forums preety much but not when it comes to "Abaxter...the Adninistrator" I need help with computers so I have to find it somewhere. I can't abuse the trade for a certain amount of service from the tech I know. For all he's done and still doing for me I've way surpassed my limit!

I didn't want to come across as a creep or a wierd internut "stalker", i mean - you just don't know who is posting out here in the internet. I wanted you to feel that you are safe - and no pressure if you wanted to offline a topic - hey -i've been there before in this life! i'm on your side !!
how is the new laptop ??

Oracledba,
Thanks, I understand now! I was nervous because you never know these days but I didn't get that impression with you. Because the way people/things are these days was one reason I needed to think about it along w/ the others I mentioned. Like how I don't like to impose on someone personally, I am extremely personal and I'm a terrible communicater by writing/emailing!

You might have seen my post for help. The 9300 came with a defective Display (not even the TrueLife). If you haven't seen it by now , you can look for it rather than me explaining again and ending up writing another short story, it should be easy to spot.

I'm not doing so well right now and I have no clue what's going to happen. It's so hard for me to keep going through one bad thing after another and try to keep working on prolonging my life! (I know! A terrible thing for me to mention) [:(]

With you working so much you have to be exhausted and I may be too much of a problem now with all my computer problems. i went through my ex husband working 80 hrs a week for years. It can catch up with you! You really only get probably 4 hours sleep a night. Five if you're lucky!

Thank you again for explaining! [:)]

I'm in a situation I had prayed wouldn't happen. It's a figure of speach,I'm not religeous and if you are I don't mean to put you down by my comment!

Sorry to hear about the display. I did read about some other people who had issues with their display, and they had they replaced - a Dell Tech would come and do it for them. It didn't seem to be a big deal, but I know it is disppointing when you are excited waiting for a the new machine.
I was really disappointed to get the order delay. Now I'll have to wait another week. I've had to use my 600D and it is small and gets really hot.
I do get about 5 hours sleep a night, it gets really really hard sometimes. I just have to pace myself. I guess it's better to be busy and have so much work - than to have no job or no work - because i have a family to support.
I'm not religious either - i guess you just call it "spiritual". Anyway the invitation stands to email me at: [email protected] . I am almost always online in someway, or yahoo IM. Sometimes I can't get on Yahoo because I'm involved in something, but i check it regularly.
