now i should note that the expected time to burn was about 4 mins and the actual time to burn was around 8 mins. I was using the newest copy of nero 7 to burn as well. can anyone tell me whats wrong? I dont want to waste any more dvd's on this if it's an easily fixable problem.

Can't help ya with your question, but my newly acquired i9300 with sony 8x dvd burner takes OVER 1 HOUR to rip / burn a dvd using 16x Verbatim DVD-R's. This is done with ANYDVD / CLONEDVD2. My desktop machine does the same dvd in 14 minutes.

Home machine is an Athlon 64 3200+ / 1gb / Raptor HD / 16x DVD / etc... Still, shouldn't be THAT much faster.

Something is up with these Dell SONY 8x'ers

I'd try to use different software. If you're doing a dvd copy (you better own it and burn the copy before sun-up boy!)LOL, make sure to use brand name media (narrow down the problems here) and use the same software I mentioned above. They have free trials at slysoft.com if you can't find them on your own (wink).

Try the rip / burn on a different system. I often have some that won't read all the way thru and I'll have another drive read it and it's fine. Some drives are just picky when it comes to source discs and brand name of blank media.

You can also look for firmware upgrades for that dvd-rw drive as well. Google it.

    bump
SG as graciously decided to unlock this thread. My problem still persists, i cannot burn media onto dvds. I am using phillips "-" 16X dvd's and the files are approx 3-4 gigs in size. I have tried using alcohol 120%, windows media player and nero 7 to burn various files to no avail. I noticed while using alcohol 120% that I never reach full speed over the course of the burning. Also the approximate time for burning dvd's is almost double to triple the expected time that nero 7 predicts.
Also on a side note, how do i burn dual layer dvd's using nero 7? i PURCHASED (not downloaded to avoid any confusion) a copy from best buy but it wasn't professional version and I'm not sure how to burn the dual layer dvd.
If i cant find a fix to these problems i will send it back to dell before the 21 day unconditional warrenty expires
    thx

BTW the burner in question is a NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A

Have you tried NTI DVD Maker? That's somewhat basic but reliable software. I haven't had any issues with it - been using it for over three years.

Perhaps the NEC drive does not like the media. I would use Sony or Memorex media, see if those work.

BTW - can you burn anything else onto those DVD's without issues?

I have the same DVD driver and had trouble burning a DVD. I tried to burn SW Ep III for a friend of mine and before I tried to actually burn, I decided to simulate first and it got me an error at 2%. Let me say first that I know it may be protected which is why I went with simulate first and second that I didn't know it was a Dual layer DVD.

Tried again with Kill Bill and happened the same thing. Tried again with Final Fantasy X for the PS2 and it got to 85% and made an error.

Haven't gotten around to try and make a data disc yet. Btw, I'm using Nero too.

I didn't think of this earlier, but Nero doesn't copy protected DVDs or DVDs larger than 4.4gb (i believe, not 100% sure).

That's why I'm leaving this thread open. I'm assuming that everyone here is the owner of the protected media.

for a while I had anydvd installed and with the Sony drive it seemed toscrew up Nero (this is generally not the case with other more reliable drives) to the point where it would not burn certain type of media (like +r if I remember).

Uninstalling this allows the drive to function. There is a firmware update on the dell site but I cannot get it to install. It does not think there is a sony drive installed. Ultimately the real answer for those of us with these junk drives will be to either live with it or relpace the thing with something which works better.
