Like many people, I opted for the 1440x900 screen over the higher resolution one. I game a lot, and I wasn't interested in having to stretch every game I wanted to play on it. However, I don't particularly like how the screen looks - the viewing angle doesn't impress me, and the colors aren't as vivid as I'd like.
I came across the website of a company that apparently will repolarize your current LCD for $100 plus shipping. I'm not sure what that means, but from the product description it sounds like they apply the same kind of TrueLife style high-gloss shiny coating to your existing screen, which would make it look brighter and more vivid, and also improve the viewing angle.

Does anyone know anything about this company, or even others that offer a similar service? Is it too good to be true?

so now that you have the XGA screen (non-truelife) do you wish you had the UXGA (truelife) screen? just curious because im considering a I9300 and am unsure which screen to pick..
and is it true that games have to be stretched to use the UXGA screen?
thanx -
Basically, I wish I had the TrueLife coating on the lower resolution screen. I'm very picky with framerates - I don't even like how some games run in 1680x1050 on my 7800GT sometimes. I personally wouldn't consider a 1900x1200 resolution for gaming with the 6800.

i love my non truelife display, on my screen the colors are nice and bright (ive got the LG screen...which do u have?)
i personally HATE all the reflections you get from the glossy screen -
I'm not a big gamer, but from an entertianment perspective, I don't like my current screen either. Its just not the screen i hoped for, so I'm seriously thinking about buying a truelife screen.
I've checked out that site a few times before. I believe the option that you will need is to upgrade (scroll to the very bottom of the link you posted). If you aren't in a hurry and are really interested in this company, we might be doing a review of them very soon.

I'm pretty sure mine is an LG as well. The viewing angle drives me nuts - I'm constantly readjusting it. I spent a few hours calibrating it and it doesn't look too bad. I made a custom color profile using Adobe Gamma and adjusted it further using Nvidia color correction.
What I would like the most is something similar to the 2005FPW screen - it's matte but very bright and a wide viewing angle. -
The bottom of that page has their pricing scheme, which I think suggests that the $100 is for the repolarization of an existing screen:
I also wonder if other 17" LCDs will fit in the Inspiron.. looks like they sell every screen under the sun (prices are painful, though). -
I hate to bump my own post, but as I've done more research into the matter I'm also now considering the possibility of purchasing a Toshiba TruBrite WXGA screen and swapping it out for my existing one. I just have to find out whether or not it'd be compatible. If I do go through with it I'll be sure to post the results of my experiment.

I went to the mall and seen the trulife screen, I don't know I didn't like it too much, I mean it was brighter than the WXGA+ but the glare is something that I didn;t like too much...not much when you have it on your lap across a room from a light or something...I work alot public places and I am a taller person so I tend to have to set the screen a little further back than most people to get the "sweet spot" so the effect of glare would be amplified for me. I would love to hear how the experiment goes...I know a few people that might be up for that if it succeeds.
-
Definetly keep us up-to-date if you decide to do the experiment. I'm curious also to see if it would work.
-
That experiment would definately be interesting. I never heard anything like that before but sounds do-able. Ya, keep us up-to-date forsure.
-
I'm trying to find out from the eBay merchant I've found if the screen he has will work in it.
Just hoping I don't break anything if I go through with it - being a broke college student with a week-old laptop isn't exactly the best situation for an experiment of this price -
Hahaha, ya that's true. Don't think I would take any risky experiment on a $2000 machine, but then again, I don't take many risks to begin with ;p.

Jenny...when you find out if that will work, please post, I would like to try and replace the screen...to experiment with it
-
I contacted the company and asked them a few questions about the screens. He sounded pretty excited when I told him that if it worked out I'd send more people his way. I'm going through with it - total came to $318.95 (I used the PayPal gift code "C11-GIFTGUIDE " to get an extra $25 off). The man I talked to said that he put a TruBrite in his own laptop and that it should work just fine.
I will keep everyone posted on the progress of this little experiment!
Edit: Almost forgot - here's the item I bought - there's 1 left in case anyone else feels daring!

Crazy . Is that the actual entire LCD itself? You are going to take the thing off it's hinges and put the new one on? (Or is it somesort of reflective cover that goes on top of the LCD screen?)
-
You have to pull the entire bezel apart and put a new screen in. Dell has very good documentation on how to do this properly:

That's neat.
