Is the 9-cell battery larger than the 6-cell? ie. does it stick out the back?

Yes it is larger, but it doesn't stick out the back, it sticks out at the bottom. There are pros and cons to this.

Pro: Angles the computer which makes for easier typing when sitting on a desk/table

Con: less comfortable when sitting on ur lap, as more pressure is applied to your legs where the battery is. This is also kind of a pro as it allows for better airflow...

I'd advise getting the 9-cell. I love mine, and think its definitely worth the extra cash.

A google image search for "dell studio 9 cell" will bring up a picture of a red XPS, the battery on the studio's are the same design

Personally, the only drawback to the 9 cell is the added weight (but when the whole thing weighs so much, is it really an appreciable difference?). It does stick out the bottom, but I love it having a "foot." It's basically a built-in stand. It's more comfortable on the table AND in the lap. The only issue is that it could possibly not fit well in some bags. But I get 4 hours of battery life fairly easily.

Someone mentioned to me that the 6-cell and 9-cell were the same size. Thanks for clearing the air. Rep'd!

Those are from 2005-2007 era Inspirons (i.e 6000/6400/9300 etc). My Inspiron 6400 had a 9-cell battery and it is exactly the same size and dimension as a 6-cell battery. The only difference is weight of course.

Another pro for the 9cell battery is that because it's sticking out the bottom, it raise the bottom and get better airflow.

I love the 9 9 cell on my Studio 17. It really doesn't make the laptop any less portable, and the extra runtime is definitely worth it.
