I think I am going to buy the d260 through school, but i cant change the battery, and this seems like it could be really annoying

    thanks

I'd get the 6 cell, plus the 6 cell battery that fits in the media bay. I seldom use the optical drive anyways.

Yes, I totally agree with gggonzalez. Although that rout would be more expensive. The 9 cell sticks out of the D620 about 9/10 of an inch. I would think that would be very annoying and awkward. But the modular bay battery and the regular 6 cell should provide you with around 7hrs of power.

You can save money by keeping an eye out for the modular bay battery on ebay. All the D-series Latitudes (D600, D610, D800, etc) with modular bays use the same modular battery, so they're fairly plentiful and can be had for cheap. I've bought two within the last year and each for under $40 US shipped to Canada (so even less if you're in the states!).

I don't think I've read of anyone with the 9-cell being annoyed with it protruding.

Lazybum is right, no one has complained about the extended battery. My only compaint, and I do NOT have it, nor do I even have my D620 yet (work is buying it for me "soon"), that it compromises portability a bit. I know its only an inch, but thats an extra inch I'd prefer not having to deal with. Yeah, picky.

Another thing is that I like the flexibility. You can leave the media bay empty, and have an even lighter laptop. Heck, if I could find a cheap one, I'd consider getting a 4 cell battery, and using that thing on my way to work in the train I take each morning. I figure the 4 cell has got to be good for the hour it takes to get to the office...

The 4 cell and 6 cell are flush with the computer. There is minimal advantage of a 4 cell other than 1/4 lb. They also cost the same. Especially when I bought it.

The 9 cell actually works out well, since it doubles as a wrist rest. It is better in my opionion than something sticking out the back.
