I'm pretty much in the same boat. My insiprion 1720 with the 8600 GT 256Mb GDDR2 is almost identical in terms of oc potential. Im running 4gb system ram (2x2048 667 Mhz) with a T7700 (2.4 Ghz).
I was originally clocking with nTune and 3dmark06 to "stress" and managed to push the ram alot higher (500+) and didn't notice any artifacts or glitches at all. However I decided to give ATitool ago with its "proper" detection before I pushed the card any higher. When I ran ATitool to oc it I couldn't get the ram above 450. Core just kept going up (670?) but I'm pretty sure it peaked at 650.
Interesting that after all this oc my GPU won't go above 58 degrees even playing Crysis. Seems pretty damn low considering the clocks (650/450). Maybe a poorly seated heatsink or dodgy thermal paste? Or maybe it just runs cool?
I'm into the 4k 3dmark06 anyway, which isn't too shabby considering its the worst 8600M GT on the market. -
i just recieved my 1720 this morning with the 8600 gt in, ive not fiddled with ntune or any settings yet, ive just installed cod 4 and am gonna play in a bit when ive finished inatalling everything else
should i change/fiddle witht he overclocking ? is it 100% safe and worth while or not ?
cheers -
yea its safe i never get above 60C makes me mad i wanted to get 500+ on the ram cuz i know it would help give me some more frams cuz i gain about 400 in 3dmark06 just with the ram my top was 4100 in 3dmark with a t7300 but i was wondering since its turbocache if the ram would me a difference in overclocking the ram on the 8600m gt idk i was so mad cuz i was one of the first person to have a dell 1720 inspiron and it said 22.4gb bandwich so i was thinking it was at 700, but what can i do,

also so you could run it at 500+ cuz everytime i try to it crashes, i wonder if i should use a dell driver cuz im not, and also i run 64bit vista, i tried to bios update with adding volts .05 volts but didnt help and when i add .1 the screen gets all crazy at startup,

Ok I don't know why everyone is trying to overclock that card, it works perfect for me running at 1008mb If you want your card to run better, you shouldn't have bought a mid range. Go for a better one. Or get a desktop, get 2 good cards attatch a refrigerator to em and have some fun.
I don't know if thats what it looks like on the 1720's I'm on a vostro 1700. So if its just them then sorry I just don't get why peeps can't be happy with what they have. -
yea it looks like the same and i do have a custom bulit desktop with a 8800gts but some reason it went bad in 2 months and i bought it used so im waiting till the new g92 8800gts come out
