Actually, Dell uses a modified form of nVidia's MXM system where the graphics chips are actually removable and interchangeable with other Dell notebook's graphics chips. It's not compatible with normal MXM graphics chips, however.

I know on the 1530 its on the motherboard, and not via a MXM like chip.

my son plays half-life online and he bought this computer with the 128 nvidia 8400m GS card but can't play the games he wanted to online with it , he had an older toshiba and that played well , is this card not supported by this game ? the laptop freezes up about 20 seconds into the game so thats why I was thinking about either selling the laptop or upgrading to a better card which was the 8600m GT , I myself don't play games but I installed all updates and direct x software for this , any help would be appreciated

    Thanks in advance Again

What version of the nvidia drivers are you using? Try updating to the ones in laptopvideo2go.com

right now I don't know what he has in it because he was so frustated he deleted everything and did a reformat but I did go to nividia to download and they directed me to dells site to get the updates for some reason , I had all updates with the bios upgraded and it still didn't play any of the half-life games

I'll try that site in alittle bit, but is this card suppose to play these games!because I found someone post a thread on d3lls site saying that this card can't play any of the newer games? is this true or not?

    Thanks

Yeah, it's not a very good card but it should be able to play Half Life.

he plays some games online no sure which ones but it's in half-life and it freezes right up , that must be one bad card because I believe that old toshiba played the game and that was about 3 years old

anyway what would be your oppion on changing out and swapping the 2 cards I know there compatible because thats what was offered when configed

how long have you had the laptop? you could just return the laptop and order a new one. it sounds like you need to update the drivers. use the ones from laptopvideo2go.com - download 169.28. Read the instructions on their forums.

Iv'e had the laptop about 8 days maybe less , will they do a return ? my son isn't happy with it at all the toshiba was a celeron 3 yrs old bought for $400 or less at BB and it played the game this was I think $650 and can't play nothing :D it's kinda funny, dou 2 core and all :D

maybe I should ask about a return before anything and then order another with the 256mb card ,

I'll try them drivers when he gets home if he's got most everything else installed and see what happens , it's kinda funny, Thanks!

I have an 8400M GS and I can play Half Life 2 with all settings on max at native resolution... it must be a software or hardware issue.

well i checked directx diagnostics and found one problem but after googling found an answer to that and removed it , did all firmware updates and the bios and drivers no conflicks anyware the laptop is pretty fast defraged the drive check the system , installed the 5 disks tried to play after all updates and no good , then he uninstalled the game and downloaded the from the website direct still no good kept freezing up after 20 seconds into the game

IMO I thought it was d3lls quickset program that controlls how you connect to the web instead of how windows controls how you connect , that was my only concern but I ran thru everything , the only thing I wasn't able to do was stop that program and let windows controll the web part , but that couldn't be an issue either because I told him to play off line and it still frozed up , I went thru evey devise in devise manager and updated everything did the dells website thing and downloaded everything , no conflicks nothing went to the games website found a couple of things to try didn't work , i'm out of options , tonight I talked to d3ll about installing another video card the 256 mb card and i'll pay well they gave me the run around for 1 hr. and then I hung up ,then I wound up here and posting HELP or something  :D

how much RAM does the vostro have? also, what resolution did he try in game and out of game? try at lowest possible settings. such as 600x900/ Anti-Aliasing off. no shadows. just dumb it down fully. if it still doesn't work, and the drivers don't work, get a replacement. But i definitely suggest at least 2GB's of ram for gaming if you don't already have it.

Also, i don't believe quickset effects how the PC connects to the internet. it is just there to let you easily change the settings within windows. it's just an interface basically. I Believe.

not to reopen this thread, but i have had similar problems with my dell 1520 w/ 8400m card. using vista i found that aero used up ALOT of memory. once i disabled aero my graphics were 10x better. i came across this problem from bad video playback off of streaming sites (i used a desktop computer on the same internet connection with an 8800 gts that had flawless playback). this may or may not help with the current situation.

i am too looking to upgrade but currently i can only find dell as a supplier and i dont think a refurbished card @ 140+ dollars is really worth it at the moment.

I sent my computer back to d3ll and waiting for a refund, I bought a compal IFL90 and it'll be here tomorrow , anyway I know d3ll has the 8600 graphics card refurbished on there site for 149. if I remember right , I was thinking about doing the upgrade but said it aint worth the trouble , so when I get pissed I just spend more $$ on something better , all the time spent in that computer wasn't worth my time , IMO if it dosn't work out of the box foreget it for now on ;)
