Which is better? My old laptop had a Go 7900 GS in it. Wondering if the 8600M GT is an improvement, other than DX10 support.

They should perform about the same... 7900gs might be a little quicker and would be a better performer on higher res screens- higher memory bandwidth.

How about on 1680x1050 ? Will the difference be much?

7900gs would probably perform a little better at that res. It would also use more power- lower battery life.

7900GS is quicker in traditional tasks and 8600MGT isn't good enough to be justified as an "upgrade"

Well I had got the e1705 about 2 months ago. And then soon after the new inspirons came out. So my dad agreed to buy me this new one, customized however I want, and he'll just take the e1705. I'll be losing money in the deal, cuz the new inspiron is gonna be about $300 cheaper, but i'm getting a better laptop. Santa Rosa, faster hard drive (7200rpm), the webcam, etc, and I personally like the 8600M GT because it has DX10. The only games I really care about running are starcraft 2 and crysis, and it should run those pretty good hopefully.

Wait for something with the 8800M-GT to come out for a real upgrade. The Clevo M570RU should have it in a couple of months. Clevo will also probably update the D900 to SLI 8800M too..

Too much money and too long to wait. All I care about is running Crysis and Starcraft II, and the 8600M GT should run them at medium.

sarcastic are we.....anyways...8600m gt will run starcraft 2 with flying colors but will struggle with crysis...it wil definitely be able to play on low/medium settings i would think....but the 7900 will outperform it (probably not by too much tho)...you will have to base this decision on other factors than the gpu...if everything else is what u want, then it is probably a good idea to get it (i'm guessing that your father will let u keep ur laptop till you get the new one).

Well he took it already, but yeah I can use it if I want. I also have a desktop (outdated and not upgrading anytime soon) which i'm using now. Out of all the options I have right now, the Dell 1520 has everything I want, and the price is good. I'm getting it with C2D Santa Rosa 2.0ghz, the 8600M GT, 2GB DDR2 Ram, 160gb 7200rpm hard drive, 1680x1050 screen. I mean, as long as I can run Crysis somewhat decent i'll be happy. I don't PC game much, although a hardcore console gamer, but I wanna be able to play CS:S, Starcraft II, WoW, a few others. And sorry for sounding rude or w/e.

its ok i was kinda being dumb caz i'm pissed at dell...anyways....with the higher resolution (unless you play in a lower resolution) you will struggle with crysis even more....i still think you will be able to play it on low settings though if worse comes to worst. 8600m gt will blow cs:s and wow out of the water....or any other game thats been out for a while (fear, oblivion, etc...)

What if I play Crysis in 1440x900 or a lower resolution than 1680x1050 ?

    Check out this link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=147324

If you want to play it at a lower resolution like 1400x900 or 1280x800 it's going to be fuzzy, unless you play it at 1680/2x1050/2 = 840x525, in which case it'll look perfect but everything will be ginormous.

Ugh, some have said it won't be fuzzy, some said it will. I don't know what to do.

It'll definitely be fuzzy if you're using it at 1440x900 or 1280x800, the reason it's not going to be fuzzy at 840x525 is because instead of having each physical pixel display one pixel on the screen, every four physical pixels in your screen is displaying one pixel on the screen, so the image is large but is still clear. It's fuzzy at other resolutions because the physical pixels don't line up and you can't have half a pixel display one color and half a pixel display another, so I guess the screen just kinda fudges it, and that's where the fuzz comes from.
