Any chance you can put a 8600M GT card from a Vostro 1500 into a 1400? I'm aware there may be some thermal issues, but I wonder if it's possible. Not sure if the form factor of the 8600 is the same as the 8400. Has anyone tried this? Or is it obviously impossible?

    Thanks,

If it does not let you add it when you build it then i would guess not. Either not enough room or heat issues.

If Dell doesn't make the 8600GT available as an option on the 1400, then you can't upgrade to it.

So it's obviously impossible as it won't fit.

All Dells GPU's use the exact same bus connector, so you can connect them. Problem is, feeding the power to the card and actually making it fit inside the machine. But if you're cool with keeping all the internal parts out of the casing just so you can have a 8600m GT, then you can do it.

I've seen people yank the MOBO's out of Vostro's lay them on a desk and connect the 1730's SLI 8700's up. Works but demeans the idea of it being a laptop because the end result is a MOBO and GPU sitting on a desk with cables plugged everywhere.

But to get the card to fit INSIDE the machine - Never. Not until Dell offers a solution.

Thanks for the response..it was worth a hope :) I know the 8000 series are supposed to be pretty heat efficient, so I would venture a guess that the 1400 could keep the thermals under control if Dell were to release this part. I think the only concern they would have is that this machine ships standard with the 6 cell battery, and I know on the 1500, they want you to upgrade to the 9 cell if you opt for the 8600. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

Edit: Just found that Asus, Zepto, and BenQ all offer the 8600M GT in a 14" notebook. So maybe Dell will follow lead.

I doubt you'll see 8800 GPU's in the Inspiron lineup. It would suck the sales of the XPS lineup. Why pay the $2000 - $4000 premium for a gaming machine with 8800m graphics when you can buy a cheap $1000 Inspiron with the same GPU?

Exactly why they might never do it.

Sucks I know.. lol Heres hoping though!

    I don't want an 8800, just an 8600 :)

lol Likely to never happen either, it'd suck the thunder away from the 15/17 inch models.

It's like a domino effect, screw one up and they all fall or something.

But a graphics card from an XPS could connect to the motherboard of a Vostro or Inpsipron? The connectors are the same?

    This intrigues me.

Yeah..the adapter/bus is the same on all the Dell machines for dedicated GPU's.. Dell do it to save cost.

May I inquire as to which models of the Asus and BenQ lineup have the 8600? They have better service where I live, so I could go for them rather than risking importing a Vostro...
