has anyone tried taking the 8600 chip out of a 1530 and putting it into a 1330?

that would be the world's best mod.

They are soldered onto the motherboard from my understanding.

The 8600 GT in the 1530 isn't soldered, but the 8400 GS in the 1330 is.. Not doable... Because even if you manage to (somehow, hypothetically) desolder the 8400GS, there's no pin compatible chip that'd fit there..
    End of story.

I would prefer people figure out the structure of their laptop before asking mission impossible...:0)

Traditionally, all Dell notebooks that have a dedicated graphics card have been modular, with reverse MXM sockets, so that if a repair or fix was needed to the internals, it would be easier for the technician and easier for the repair depot to figure out the possible issue. The m1330 may pr may not be an exception due to its size.

However, having a modular video card does not mean its upgradable, only removable. In the case of the m1330, it's only offered with the m1330 8400GS, thus limited to only the m1330 8400GS. In comparison, the Dell 1520 has the 15xx 8600GT, 15xx 8400GS and x3100 option, with the latter being onboard, so it is soldered onto the motherboard, whereas the two nVidia solutions are modular. Therefore, a 1520 user with a 15xx 8400GS can upgrade to a 15xx 8600GT, or vice versa, but is limited to that only.

While I can not confidently say the 8600GT that Dell uses in their 15.4" notebooks don't have the same socket as the m1330 8400GS, there are many other factors.

    1. Form factor, the 8400GS and 8600GT have different sizes, as well as a different heatsink and will require a different internal 'bedding' so that it will fit.

    2. Socket. Dell uses a reverse MXM(MXM is nVidia's modular graphics technology, MXM able notebooks can freely have their graphics card replaced and potentially upgraded) so there may be similarities in their line of notebooks, but perhaps not 100% the same.

    3. Heat. More power = More heat output. Will the notebook last in that scenario?

    4. BIOs. The motherboard may not recognize the new hardware.

All in all, I would not have high expectations that it can, but if you want to try, best of luck there :)

I never tried it but I was wondering it as well. But in reality, I knew it would be impossible.

If it is possible, there are many laptops of the M1330 size with the NV8600GT.

Maybe the newer NV9500GS fit into it without generating too much heat , I can't wait to see next generation XPS M1330 , probably designed based around the new Montevina Penryns like T8500 , T8600, T9700 .ETC with the NV9xxx.

I might be wrong though, currently, the only one laptop of the size of the XPS M1330 with the NV8600 or 9500GS is the ASUS F8SN.

And the ASUS gets really hot.

Both the 1330 and 1530 have GPU's soldered to the motherboard.

The 3 large, square chips you see are the CPU, Chipset and GPU.

The LG p300 is 13.3" and has a 8600GS. It's as thin as the m1330, and is fairly cool, which is pretty surprising. Gaming will, however, ramp up the heat levels to around 70-75~.

i just wondered cause when my 1330 overheated before Dell initially said they would replace the video adapter and hard-drive (heat from palm-rest).
