Which is the better overall system:

    Dell 8600
    1.5GHz Centrino
    512Mb DDR RAM
    60GB HD
    64Mb nVidia Graphics
    15.4" UXGA Wide Aspect screen

    or

    the NEW Dell 510m
    1.7Ghz Centrino
    512 Mb DDR RAM
    60GB HD
64Mb Shared Graphics (Intel Extreme Graphics?)
    15" SXGA Screen

They are roughly the same price but the 510m is faster and lighter. I am a little concerned about the 'shared memory' graphics but I dont play many games. I watch a lot of DVD's though. Is the slightly smaller SXGA screen a problem?

I want a portable laptop but I wont be carrying it around everyday - more like once or twice a week. I love the sound of the 8600 and its spec, but it sounds like it weighs a ton and it has a slower processor for the same price!

    Anyone own either of these?

What about build quality? Are they both similar? I am hearing scary stories about Dell quality.

The 8600 is heavy, but offers more firepower options, which it sounds like you don't need. I would think the 500 series would be a better fit for the way you want to use it. You need to decide between power and portability/battery life.

Dell is having problems, so get a long warranty with either...I woud think the 500 edges the 8600 in build quality though.

I think they are talking about the 600M series? There certainly is not a 500m Dell machine.
