Imagine my disappointment when the shipment from Dell which should have been my new 600m instead turned out to be a 4600 desktop! Once I got Dell to understand what happened I got the 4600 returned and my account credited for the notebook I didn't receive. However, this may be a blessing in disguise as after I had ordered the 600m I got a chance to use a Compaq x1000 and really liked it, especially the widescreen. I realize this is a Dell forum and opinions are probably skewed towards favoring Dell but between the Compaq and the 8600 do you believe one is superior to the other? I use the notebook for managing our small business and web, e-mail, etc. -- no gaming. I want something light enough as to not be a burden when I take it with me but I don't need anything too light. Anyway, is one better or should I be considering something else? Thanks for the input.

Peronally, from the issues that I've read about for the Dell units, it would make me want to lean towards the HP. Just a side note thought, I used to have Compaq & HP notebooks, but I don't think I'm biased [ ;)] on this matter. I believe there was an issue with the 600M's regarding hot palm rests, but am not 100% sure.

The Compaq X1000 series is a nice unit. Other models in the HP line that are built on the same platform as the X1000, are the HP ZT3000 and the NX7010. These are generally the same units with different outer shells. From what I've noticed about the standard HP LCD's, is that they're brighter than most other manufacturers. HP also has a Brightview version of the LCD which almost doubles the brightness and clarity, but also doubles the amount of glare because the screen now has a high gloss finish rather than the matte finish on other LCD's. if you want more info on the HP line, post a message in the HP forum and I'm sure you'll get a lot of un-biased opinions.
