I am seconds away from buying a Dell 8600 Centrino Widescreen and want to know if I am making a mistake?

    Pentium M Centrino 1.5GHz - 1MB on-die L2 cache
    512MB 333MHz DDR RAM
    15.4" WUXGA (1920 x 1200) UltraSharp Wide - Aspect Screen
    64MB DDR nVidia(R) GeForce(TM) 5200 Go AGP 4x
    TrueMobileTM 1400 Wireless Mini-PCI card 802.11 a/b/g
    60GB Hard Drive
    Modular 8x DVD/24xCD-RW Combo Drive

Is this a good buy? Anything I need/dont need?

There's nothing extra special in here. My only suggestions are; drop to XP home and drop to 256RAM and buy another DIMM from Crucial. Those moves will save you another ~$200.

    Hi!
    Did you buy the 8600?
My husband and I just bought (2-5) and received (2-13) the 8600. It's the first laptop either of us have used so have nothing to compare it to. But so far we just love it. We already had a copy of Pro and upgraded it right away. From what I've learned in my searches, Pro is the better choice. I'm not sure where you are buying it from but the current promotion has it coming with 256 mb ram with a free 256 upgrade; dvd burner;not sure if they deduct from the price if you choose not to take the upgrades; and this weekend they are giving a 2.0 MP Fuji digital camera with it. I've already got that camera(an older version of that model) but decided what the heck. I called them this morning and insisted they send me one and that's just what they're going to do!
As long as it's less that 30 days from when you receive yours, they'll honor most of their freebies if you miss out on any of them.
If you did order one, hope you're as happy with it as we are.

Way to stick it to the man, Gypsy! Now that's how to deal with those service reps!
