Just got an 8600. Since most of the stuff I'll do with it will be plugged in, I'd rather not leave the battery in all the time. I'd like to just charge it and remove it and leave it in the case (I know it won't overcharge - this is personal preference).

However, when the battery is out, obviously, the bottom of the laptop is exposed... Does anybody manufacture an empty battery "shell" that could be used in place of a real battery that would protect the otherwise exposed empty battery area?

    Thanks

Wide Duct Tape would do the job, actally I had my battery out only one time to see what it looked like then put it back in, it's been in ever since. Your battery in will provent dust from getting in even like me you ony use the adapter for I am disabled and this Notebook isn't going anywhere. I hope this helps you and don't forget to turn back the clock DST is over tonight at 2:30AM.[ :)]

I don't think that storing a full battery is a good idea. You'd better check that one out before you do it.

Dell inspiron batteries have a life span of 300 to 500 charge/discharge cycles, depending on which model you get. Most laptop batteries are good for only a year before not retaining a GOOD charge. You should be able to lengthen its life by only periodically charging it. I would not go thru the trouble unless you rarely use the battery.
