Hi,
I've just downloaded Centrino Hardware Control 1.8.2 just to monitor temperatures mainly and I've just read on the Battery tab that my battery has a wear rate of 8%, this means that when it's fully charged, it's actually at 92%!!!! I'm astounded for this finding since my laptop is BRAND NEW!!! I know it should downgrade because of the use but this is computer is a little more than a week old. Is this really accurate?? Is it normal to receive a battery with this fault? The first time it was turned on was last Monday (12th).
I have an i9300 w/following specs:
Pentium M 1.73Ghz
1 GB Ram
60GB HDD
8x DVD/CD burner
256Mb Nvidia Geforce Go 6800
9 cell battery
$1289 w/out shipping and taxes

Drain the battery down to around 1% and then recharge fully, then see what the reading is after.

That happens sometimes...especially if you leave your lappy plugged in all the time. I have seen this with many laptops. There is a few threads on other sites about taking the battery out if you are leaving the laptop plugged in. They say this will prevent that from happening.
-
Thanks, will definitely try to leave it down to 1%. I do exercise the battery, meaning that I work on battery most of the time and only plug it when it gives the low battery warning. Will let you know what the reading is afterwards, I hope it was just a misread...
-
I had 6% in a month and 99% of the time I have my battery out. It is still 6% after 4 months. Friend of mine with dell 9300 has 17% in a year. But he has battery always plugged in. So yes it is a bad thing to see.
-
So I got a somewhat crappy battery...go figure.....
-
I think it may be in tolerance borders. See if it is getting worse in a month. Also when the battery is brand new, it needs few cycles of emptying and charging in order to get max perfomance. If it stays around 8%, maybe it is good as it can be.
I don't have 9cell batt, but that should be an advantage. I think mine is 6cell. -
So would anybody else care to post their wear rates?? I'm just curious to see what would the average be on a new laptop.
-
Mines not new but eight months old and i have a wear rate of 0% according to centrino hardware control
-
ebay ya a 9cell. they have dell 'new' 9cells for around 60-70 bones. Cheaper than the upgrade costs from Dell.com.
-
how much for shipping?
I noticed on alot of ebay they sell the item cheap but shipping really kills alot of the deals. -
I did what Fresh-Popcorn suggested, well, I couldn't get it to 1% because I forgot to turn off the power management features and it went to hibernate before it reached the 1% battery life. But it got to 3% and I fully charged it and wear rate went down from 8% to 5%. Maybe I haven't stressed the battery enough, so I'll wait and see how good it works.

Here is a good thread http://www.thegamebooks.com/battery-wear-level-t35.html. If you find some time visit it and fill in 5 points, and I will make statistics when enough info is collected. Maybe it will show what to search for a replacement battery?
Cheers, -
Thanks, will do later as I probably would have to check my personal email to confirm my registration and I can't do that right now....I have a **** filter here that doesn't let me check sites like yahoo or msn, but no matter...Now I'm going on the second cycle of discharging battery and now I got a 6% wear, lol.......crazy battery...

I was testing newly added Powerplay abilities with 5.13, and let battery to drain. It lasted 2 hours with x700. When I charged it, I got 7% wear level. I guess that was expected. I was using my comp all the time and had an optical mouse attached. Wireless too. I guess my battery is slowly dying. Well, that's life.
Cheers, -
mine is at 3% and i usually have it plugged in all the time
wow i didnt know its that bad , so basically i should use up the battery and use AC whenever the battery is drained ? -
Its perfectly normal for a laptops battery to wear down considerbly after about 1 year of heavy use. You should always unplug your laptop in the night while your sleeping, otherwise electric currents are still trickeling in and out of the laptop, and this wears down the battery. Like someone else said just buy a new battery for $50-70 shipped on ebay.

www.pacificbattery.com is also a good battery site.

i wont have it plugged in all the time from now on
but worst case is ill replace it in a year, not a big deal
8% wear rate....!!!???
