Ok. Just checking here and I would like to know what the comparison would be like. What is the performance of the 8700M-GT card from Dell in comparison to the 7900GS that I have currently? The 8700M-GT is currently available for the XPS 1730.

If your Go 7900GS is rev0, and its volt modded and OCed, it is much much better than 8700M GT.

DX9 doesnt make it better, its a common misconception. Vista is DX10, everything is moving towards DX10. Despite many companies begging Microsoft to extend XPs lifespan, DX10 is the future. Hence why the 7900GS is no longer in the laptop model. In the future when DX10 games come around, the 7900GS may perform worse than the 8600GT. If you want some real power, get the 8800M SLI.

Except that the 8700m GT outperforms the Go 7900 GS in pretty much all benchmarks?

The 8700m GT > Go 7900 GS. Though using notebookcheck as a source doesn't count.

Ya, not sure about how Forte found that, the way I am looking at it with 3DMark06 ranks. It goes 8600mGT, 7900GS, 9500m GT, 8700mGT. (DDR3 is not specified. I would say go with the 8700 if those are your only choices. You can easily oc the card and get it to preform in the 8800 stock range. The DX10 will be nice for the future games. Personally, if I had the choice, I would just save a bit more and grab the 8800 if possible, but who wouldn't ;)

Ok. The reason here is that I have been told by Dell that the card may need to be replaced (which is total bs I think and with an ATI (downgrade) and it is a fan issue -- not a card issue) and if I need to go to dell unresolved issues department I can negotiate on what my replacement laptop model might be. They don't have a system with equal specs so going better is the only other route. I won't accept a straight 1720 being that the highest end card is the 8600M-GT and I will be running XP until performance improves on Vista.

Well it was the fan and they finally replaced it. Now the system sits idle and varies from 60C to 70C. I did a test and it passed and the fan is audible now. I also used I8kfangui to force that specific fan on and I can hear it.

My 7800 recently died on my E1705 and they replaced it with a X1400. It's a pile of crap, but does increase my battery life by double and reduced heat by half (my 7800 would average 76 while doing nothing). I'm still pretty pissed. On the other hand i don't even play games anymore. I do play ocasionally play warcraft III, even though it's an old game, i'm pretty sure the X1400 won't be able to run it at 1920x1200 like i use to. My warranty runs out in feb 09 after 3 years. Do they have anymore 7900gs to replace the video with? I'm hopping the 7900gs will at least run starcraft II and Diablo III when they come out.

I'm sure that card will run those games pretty well. As I remember the 7900mGS was a strong card and one of the best OCing cards out. But yeah I would definitely recommend having them give you the correct card, even if you don't game anymore giving you an x1400 to replace a 7800 is wrong.
