Hi, I was going to get an e1705 for college today and wanted truelife glossy and the 7900gs as a video card. Unfortunately, and I have no idea why, its not there anymore... is this a mistake by Dell or are they moving the nvidias to the 8m series?

Its no mistake. Dell is coming out with new laptops(1420,1520,1730,xps m1330). If you can wait, Dell should be releasing the Dell Inspiron E1720 w/8600m GT.

You can check the Dell Outlet. There might be some E1705 there with 7900gs.

Dell discontinued Ge Force 7900 GS

So what is going to happen with the prices? Are they going to be increased drastically in your opinion?

As I posted in another thread, I think this combination may have been discontinued due to heat issues. There are hundreds of people I have found while researching my own BSOD issue.

It seems to be a common experience to get this setup and have it working fine for 3-4 months then have it start crashing with increasing frequency.

The bottom got noticibly hot. I know this is OK in some cases, but the fact that my 256 megs of video memory is completely fried now (was fine when I got it) is pretty good evidence that it cooked itself. I also noticed that the thing would get hot before the fans kicked in correctly so who knows where the fault really lies (nvidia product, dell hw design, heat sensors, fan SW) Search around and you will find enough people with this problem that you will probably not want this setup and I can't help but think dell is only offering integrated on the 1705 because they've seen 1000s of RMAs with this.
