I agree - its not really worth it to go through all the trouble just to get a faster GPU - the modifications in the long run may damage your notebook and the amount of life it will get.

Why does Dell not sell 6/7800 GPUs in their 9400s anymore? I mean, they had them in the 9300..

Now (looking at Canadian prices), I need to "upgrade" to an XPS M170 (to the tune of +$900) in order to get one of these graphics chips..
Comparing the specs of the two systems, I see:
    CPU: 9400 > M170
    Battery: 9400 < M170 (cheap upgrade, though)
    Wireless: 9400 < M170 (why no upgrade on the 9400 for 802.11a?)
    GPU: 9400 << M170

    (see:

    http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=ca&CS=CABSDT1&l=en&OC=OCINSPM170_FEAT_E1)

I don't see how the differences justify the $900 additional cost.

My interest in all of this stems from my desire to put the GTX heatsink on the 7800go I have overclocked :) And also if the 7900 will fit inside :)

The 7800 isn't offered in the 9400 / E1705 because of a shortage. So the much inferior X1400 has replaced it...

    Jason,

I am aware of the shortage, I have a replacement laptop on order since I received this one. It has been delayed a dozen times. There is hope of a shipment next week though :)

It is worth the wait, the E1705 I have now runs very well with a 40% o/c on the vid card, Oblivion looks sweet!
