I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that the desktop 7800s are no longer being made. Now its just the 7900.

I cant find ANY news on the 7900 go, but you know it's being made. I wonder if they really did run out of 7800 go, because they are no longer in production... And now the x1400 is the temporary solution.

What would really suck is if they keep the x1400 for the full life of the E1705... And make a E1706 (or whatever they call it) and then give it the 7900 go and the merom processor. All of this would happen before the year end, so that would kind of be a kick in the pants for people who got the E1705.

Yea but I read somewhere that the Yonah processor in the 9400 can be upgraded to a Merom when it is released. Hopefully the same can be done with the 7800 and the 7900.
Considering I spent a lot of money on this laptop it would be a killer to see it completly outclassed within the next 6 months.

I read that too. It was on anandtech... but I cant find the article anymore.

It would be really expensive to upgrade that though. Probably like $400 for the GPU, and $200-$300 for the processor. Plus the main reason to upgrade to the Merom is for the 64 bit, so then you would need Vista 64... another $200. Thats $800-900 lmfao.

Plus all that ugrading... wouldn't do much. Both the Merom and 7900 are expected to be quite a bit better on power, but the performance difference isnt that great.

I thought Merom and Conroe used 800fsb. And just to tell you, the i9300 was outdated in 11-12 months.

I wouldn't be surprised if dell updated their line fairly quickly. The 9300 did have a short life, but so did the XPS Gen 2. It was only out for about 6 months, before it was replaced with the M170. The M170 has only been out for a few months, and it will be replaced fairly soon.

As for the 7800 card, I honestly think that dell is having a shortage on the cards. I stated this in another post, but last year with the 9300 was released, if i remember right they ran out of the 6800 card, and was out for a few weeks.

Yes SouthernGal is correct. The 7800 Go was pulled because of supply shortage and replaced with the ATI X1400. Rather than have to explain to customers that their orders would be delayed, they decided to just update their ordering specs with another card.

Actually, Merom will use a 667MHz FSB - the Conroe uses a 1066 from the models I have seen. Some of the higher-end ones will use a 1333MHz bus.

I would not be surprised to seem them add the Go7900 as an option. Expect the new XPS to use the Go7900GTX.
