Anyone have any inside info as to why the option for any capacity of 7200 rpm hard drive is now unavailible for the e1705/e1505?
Thanks

wow, thats messed up, I've got no idea why its gone, maybe theres a shortage or they have a deal with a different hard drive maker
-
Did the prices on the 5400's go up?
-
Strange... I would think it's just a shortage. Dell does this kind of thing a lot. Should become an option again in a week or two. But, if you want a 7200RPM drive, aftermarket is usually cheaper... like newegg.
-
When you click "Continue" on the main E1705 page theres 4 choices to configure a E1705. The two more expensive options give you the choice of a 7200rpm drive..
-
Hrm.. what newegg links for HDD are worth it? Also I would love a 7200 RPM drive myself.. I can notice "some" slight lag on larger access items, but otherwise its still fairly fast.
Went with the 80 Gig 5400 RPM so I could do all my other options, glad I did too.. right now I am down to 7 GB free lol... -
The Dell order site has been a train wreck for days now. Call Dell on the phone to place your order, I'm sure they'll be able to configure your system with the options you want. They can accept coupons over the phone as well. That's what I did several days ago when the T2500 CPU didn't show up online.

Are you looking for a 100GB 7200rpm?

Nero isn't free ...
-
Ahh.. yes, the famous Dell switcheroo. Ya like others stated, their suppliers probably ran short of the 7200 drives so they are probably giving a discount on the 5400 rpm drives or something else to drive the demand away from the 7200 drives so they can restock them.
-
maybe it was to increase the battery life
-
7200 drives are louder, use more power, and create more heat, your dumb for using em in a laptop anyways.
-
lol dumb? Maybe not.... there are power users out there who like them, they are not that much louder, and who said that they have to be running on a battery the whole time? Personally, I keep my e1705 plugged in all the time when I use it.
-
yeah, dell has different setups for the insipiron series, the cheaper versions of the e1505 / e1705 might not have it, but take a look at the more expensive ones.
-
Senor, yea, but frankly if your a power user who uses a laptop rather then a desktop for everything, the inspiron series is a bit weak, id go for a full xps or something.
-
I got the 7200 RPM and I *NEVER* even hear the drive! And it sure isn't hot.
-
Well the e1705 is not exactly a pushover jeffmd, its a pretty dang solid rig that can handle almost anything you throw at it. XPS also has the high price tag to go along with the moniker so of course some will shy away from the XPS series. Inspirons are known to be multimedia and entertainment notebooks, and the e1705 is a solid choice for a dektop replacement.
-
JeffMD, you make me laugh. A lot.
Power user requiring an XPS? Puhlease ... The only thing the XPS would be better at is playing games. Power Users don't necessarily play games. Some people actually play games on gaming consoles and forgo the PC all together (i.e. me). -
-
I second JeffreyDJ in that I never hear (or almost never) hear my 7200 RPM drive!
-
I bought my dell 3 days ago and the option for the 7200rpm was gone. I called Dell and they just add $175 for it and its all good! O and order over the phone. Say your a student and you would like to receive the student discount. I got around $120 off for my student discount.

You can get a 200 gig Hitachi 7K200 for around $130, check the hot deal forum.
