i'm looking for an ultraportable ~12.1" laptop with built in optical drive. i did some research myself at various review sites and narrowed the choice down to the i700m and fujitsu s2631. i was set on getting the 700m because the dell coupon would allow me to get a pentium m 1.7 ghz l 1gb ddr sdram 2 Dimms l 80 gb l 2915 internal wireless for $1156, which i thought was a good deal.

but after reading several posts about 700m screen lock ups, i'm beginning to have my doubts.

perhaps the fujitsu is a better buy?

The Fujitsu S series is superior to the 700m across the board. You will pay for it more for it, but if you plan on using it for a number of years, over time the costs becomes less. Good Luck.

In my opinion, none of the light weight notebook are worth their mass in gold but some people don't have the room to store a 14 inch notebook or bigger.

The 700m is not bad as it comes with a glossy screan. The Fujitsu will be better but you pay for that price. If you choose the 700m, don't order it with so much RAM (or get on dimm) as Dell charges way too much for RAM and you can order less expensive options from newegg.com or even directly from Crucial.

I would hold off, dells widescreen 14 inch lappy will replace the 600M and will have a full sized keyboard instead of tiny one like the 700m.

Dell hasn't said anything and I haven't seen any speculation about a 14" model, though they could use it as that size is quickly becoming a favorite. As to the 700m though, it's the best valu-oriented thin and light out there.
