    Hi,
I'm so close to buy this one but not too hurry (waiting for another round of $750 coupon) but also wonder if Dell will have an updated model of the 700m with Sonoma platform soon..

I am thinking that 700m was released Jul 27, 04, a full year before today. That's very long in computer world :) Maybe if someone notice product life cycle of Dell could help me make a good guess about when the new model will be available.

I really like to have the better graphic card option. I plan to run on dual monitor (says with 2005FPW or 1905FP or something similar). I guess the next gen 700m (800m? :p ) would have a better integrated card or dedicated card option.
I'm doing lots of CPU intensive task, like converting raw files to JPGs, photo editing, so faster platform is more than welcome.

    What do you think?

for the work you described, you don't want something with a bigger screen?

I don't think the 700m will be updated anytime soon, it's quite popular as it is and the 600m has been around for 2 years now.

    Thanks for the reply.
and yes, I'd like to have the bigger screen and probably get over by using dual monitor setting (BTW, can the gpu drive the 1905FP or 2005FPW screen together with notebook screen?).
As from my previous thread, I really like to have the glossy screen on the i6000 which should be perfect. Since that's not the case, I'd rather go smaller and lighter to 700m rather than the 9300.
Too bad if they don't update model soon. I probably gonna buy at the next round of $750 coupon.

Just wait a week and im sure they'll have another $750 off $1,500 deal. I was initially going to purchase my 700m from the website with a student discount until i searched online and found out they had these type of coupons. The only promotion they had at the time was $600 off $1500 and $750 off $1800. I was thinking about purchasing it with the $600 off but I wasnt in a rush and a week later they had the $750 off $1500 promotion again. In short, I waited a week and saved $150 :D

Yeah, I agree. Dell's philosophy is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" apparently. The 700m's long life is justified by its sales, so people are happy with it I guess.

Well, I was just hope :)

Maybe the 600m will get updated first since that is old. (with 32MB integrated graphic... :D)

I also look at several 14" models too. Compaq v2000 and HP dv1000 and Toshiba M55 but after trying out at local CompUSA, those notebooks wrist area are way too hot.

So, I narrow down to the 700m, very portable and good design, quite small screen and people always say it runs cool.

I doubt they are going to put an dedicated video card in there when they do update it.

Dell's 700m is an ultraportable; even after the ultraportable Sonoma chipset is out, many manufacturers are sticking with the old chipset.

I agree. However, the Sonoma is bundled with better integrated card (128MB Media Accelerator 900 vs the old 64MB Extreme Graphic 2). My use would welcome more video memory since my workflow involve loading many raw images at the same time. Hopefully, it would help rendering image a little faster.

That video card would be alot nicer than the 32mb intel extreme graphic card in my notebook right now. Thats the only thing I dont like about this notebook, but my intended use was for school/portability.

To me, the video card doesn't make a difference - whether it's 64 or 128 shared, it's not my concern because I didn't buy the laptop for that purpose. For those who are seeking this laptop toplay games, get another laptop because you'll probably be disappointed (with the v card!) .
