I'm returning to school and buying a laptop for the first time. I've narrowed the search down to the 700m vs. the i6000 (they are both sitting in my cart at Dell, ready to use that $600 off coupon). I'll be using it primarily for school (papers, internet - nothing fancy). However, I am a casual gamer and would like to play games like UT2004 on my laptop. I will be commuting every day.

    The questions:

Does the 700m have enough power (especially with the integrated graphics) and are the screen and keyboard big enough for someone who is used to a 17" desktop monitor and keyboard?

Is the i6000 too heavy for everyday commuting?

I've really learned a lot from reading through the forums. Thanks in advance.

Get the i6000. The 700m is no good for games. I have never used the keyboard, but it is supposed to be pretty small and hard to use at first. Also, the i6000 is close to the same size and weight as my i8600, and I have no problem carrying mine, but it will be a little heavy. Small price to pay if you plan on gaming though, because the 700m won't cut it in that department

yeah go for the I6000 if you want to game. The 128mb ATI X300 will be able to play most of the newest games out. It compares to a ATI 9700M which can run UT2k4 without any problems.

For battery life and gaming, the i6k is good. You need a laptop backpack to carry it.

If you primary use is for notetaking and taking it to all your classes, then the 700m with the extended battery and backup battery would be more practical...minus the gaming....

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the 700m is more practical... but not as fun!

titanium, your specs are exactly what I'm thinking about ordering. Do you recommend the WUXGA over the WXGA or WSXGA? I've read a lot of conflicting opinions about the i6000 screen.

Most people recommend the WSXGA as a good compromise. The WUXGA doesn't bother me. Furthermore, when I run WSXGA I don't see that much of a difference in size of font. www.notebookforums.com has a link of the comparison of WUXGA, WXGA and WSXGA on an 8600 to get a perspective.

I don't have dedicated graphics but I don't game so it runs fine for me.
