hello all. I have a dilemma. I am trying to decide on whether to get a 600m or 700m laptop. This will basically be my only computer. I will probably be using it like 4 hours a day. I will be doing nothing more than surfing, IM, downloading music, a little word processing, etc.

Basically would it hold up with that kind of use, or would i be better suited to go with a slightly larger laptop like a 600m? Just curious as to anyone who has had a 700m and have used it pretty extensively as their sole computer or used it more than 4 hours a day.

I would appreciate all replies and opinions. I have read all post on the 700m and 600m , but just want some first hand experience here.

    thanks so much

I've used both. If you're just going to have it sitting on a desk at your home, I'm not sure that the 700m is the best solution as it's only got a 12.1" screen and with an XGA resolution that's not a whole lot of viewing area. For web surfing and multi-tasking it's really nice to have more screen real estate. I'd actually look to the Dell 6000 as an only computer that's going to mostly be at home. The Dell 600m is fine, I prefer the 700m because it's screen is so nice (glossy, bright, although smaller yes) but the 600m keyboard is slightly larger and will give you a better typing experience.

I'd really ask yourself how much you'll need to be carrying this laptop around though, if it's very little then getting one of these portable laptops doesn't make much sense.

Well, if you're going to be carrying it around even a bit, get the 700m , but it's not comfortable, as Abaxter said, to be working on the tiny screen all day. I find the resolution to be pretty high, actually (1280x800), which is more than larger sized notebooks offer. They're both good machines, but for your purpose (using it 4 hours a day), get the 6000, because it's even bigger and better than the 600m. The 6000 has a 15.4" widescreen I believe vs. the 14" 600m.

I've used my 700m for 4 hours at a time - I felt fine, but sure, it would have probably been much better to have a bigger screen. I actually do a lot of work at my house with the 700m, but for the time when I want to sit on my couch with it or on my bed , it's so great to have the smaller machine. And when I do need to go somewhere with it, it's a breeze!

The main point is , though, look into the 6000. Good luck!

Also, ABAXTER, you didn't use "it's" properly. If you're saying the screen is nicer, than you need to say "its" screen is nicer! I'm sure you knew, but hey, how often is it that you get to outsmart an administrator ? lol...

I HAD the same dilema as you-I'd go for 700M over 600M. At first I thought "Hmmm 600M is a bit cheaper a little better," but infact I researched more and more 700M became my baby.

    Why?

Well for one reason its a WIDESCREEN with trulife screen making everything look pretty and glossy. Over all the 600M looks old and it is old with a boxy screen compaired to a 700M. The performance on a 600M can't be that much better so why waste money? might as well spend a bit more and have a nice notebook.

PS- Wait for the $750 coupon which comes out liek every month it seems like... Any how REMEMBER this

DO nto Upgrade the RAM through Dell get Aftermarkets which may seem liek a hassle when dell charges $250+ for 1 GB when you can get 1GB for $100-140 with better brands.

Well, i already have wireless already set up in my home. I will be using my computet either on my bed or sitting on the couch probably 99% of the time. I just want something that has a nice screen, but yet i wont have to squint all the time to just see the 12" screen.
I am wondering, is the 700m screen user friendly to look at . Meaning, do u have to get right on the screen to see it. Is all the font real small? Do u have to scroll down alot in order to see a complete webpage, or does most of it show up? Just some questions on the 700m. Is the screen a big concern u think?

    thanks

p.s. I do have the $750 off coupon....that is why i am trying to figure out this dilemma quick...lol

The screen is unlike any other screen you have ever seen - it's so bright, and it's extremely crisp. The fonts are fine , for me. You don't have to scroll a lot. Put it this way : a 15" square monitor has a resolution of 1024x768 (those are how many pixels are on the screen to display information). The 700m's screen is 1280x800,which is higher than that of a 15" monitor. A 17" has a native resolution of 1280x1024, which is only slightly larger than that of the 700m (remember these other monitors are square here, the 700m is widescreen) That being said, you can fit more information on the screen of the 700m than larger monitors. Therefore, you'd do less scrolling on the 700m! Either way, the touchpad on the 700m is wicked...it has tons of virtual scrolling features to make whizzing through long documents a breeze.

The screen is smaller than usual, but you don't need to squint, at all, trust me. Some of the VAIO's are 10.6 - that's small! The Libretto is like 8 " lol...

Anyways, the 700m is great to have around the house if you're going to be on the couch and on the bed a lot. It makes it easier and more comfortable to hold. Having a smallerlaptop is not only for travellers, IMO - it's equally good to have around the house, and if you ever have to bring it somewhere, you don't need the bulk. I think it's better to have a smaller laptop simply for the form factor, not really the weight. Take a piece of printer paper and put it in front of you - those are the dimentions of the 700m. I feel that the widescreen is easier on the eyes - my eyes are less strained when I work on that all day compared to working on a square monitor because the human brain prefers wider images. That's why movies are in widescreen, not "tall screen" (vertically) It's harder for our brain to adapt to an image that is taller. We have a wide field of vision, so it only makes sense to have widescreen. It's also great for DVD's as they fill up most of the screen and there are less black bars! Good luck!

I would get the 700m, the 600m is an older model and is very poorly built .

u no...wit the 700m...u could change settings to scroll thru pages very quickly or slowly...it's ur choice to change the options to ur likeing :D ...and i would suggest the 700m...as it is very portable as well..even tho it has a small screen...it has a more viewing angle since it's widescreen, as quesy mentioned above as well...and my advice would b 2 order both of them at the same time...then use them both for a few days...and if u don't like 1 of them...u can always return it within the 21 day warranty period to get a full refund...that way...u no that u won't ever say that u regretted getting the other laptop than the 1 u did get...if u disliked it...but it's onli a suggestion  :D :D
