I just recently bought a 700m. Love this thing... my poor desktop has started to collect dust now!
At any rate... I've noticed that this thing runs HOT! The area right beneath the keyboard on both sides of the touch pad is so hot, I cant rest my palms there. I have it on my desk, so there's plenty of circulation underneath. Right now I have it plugged in, not sure if that makes a difference.
I forget which Pentium M I got, but it was the slower out of the 3. I could have sworn that the Centrino technology did something with the processor to make it run cooler.
Any suggestions? I've heard of programs that can tell the temperature of the processor, etc... where would I find a good one? (free?) And once I get that, how hot is above normal?
Thanks!!

Centrino Hardware Control is a pretty good program, from what I hear.
Also, to measure the temperature, you can use MobileMeter for pretty much every component. HDTune is useful for getting the hard drive's temperature - if it's running over 55 degrees, it's too hot. That is the maximum rated operating temperature of most hard drives.
I found that my laptop got too warm for my liking too - I went to Best Buy and purchased a Targus Chill Mat cooling pad - my hard drive temperature went from 58 degrees to 42
They are about $19, I suggest you get one! -
The hard drive can cause some heat issues as well.

Thanks everyone for your help. I downloaded a few programs, and wow, this thing is running hot. Last night it was averaging mid 50's. I turned it on today, and within 20 minutes, it's already up to 50, and starting to get warmer.
Now, I've had my notebook since the beginning of the month, and this is the first time that its started to really get hot. Is temps in the mid 50's normal, or should I be calling Dell for maintenance? I'm not doing anything special... just surfin the web at my desk. -
Okay, so an update. I went into MSCONFIG, and deleted out all that crap that Dell has it boot up with, and a bunch of other crap that somehow got in there. Now I'm running 15 degrees cooler! Amazing!

41 degrees is very low, don't worry about it.
Don't forget, the 700m is a very small laptop, and when you get a laptop that small, the parts are in very close proximity to one another in the case. There is not a lot of places for the heat to go - the biggest reason why small laptops get hot real fast.
I used to have an HP zv5000 - weighed in at 8.5lb, was 1.8" thick, and had a desktop processor. Ran extremely cool because of the large case. Now I have an Acer - same dimensions, except it is 1.3" thin and 6.6lbs - runs very hot due to the fact that everything is close together, and doesn't have the benefit of a large case to dissapate the heat.
Of course, it could also depend on the make/model of the hard drive, and how well the hard drive compartment is insulated. -
oh thanks for the reply. i was worried about the 41 C because its over 90 F. it was getting rather warm on my lap. i guess that's the sacrifice of having a smaller notebook. btw, i love my 700m. all the negative reviews for the 700m did not relate to me. it's been great.

Did you try out your mic-in jack on the front of the machine? Can you do so with a standard mic and listen to the playback please. I want to see if www.recall700m.com the defect still exists. This is a big decision maker/breaker for me.

i just tried using the microphone jack. the problem is gone you can calm down now ;]
