I finally got it! I'm loving it so far. Just 2 questions though:
1) When the computer was off, I just took out the cdrw/dvd drive - that's so cool! Is it safe to do that? (I know that if it was on I'd have to eject it ) but it was off, does it affect anything? I just popped it back in after.
2) Is it normal in laptops for the headphone jack to be a little buzzy. When I pluggen in my ipod earbuds, I heard like a swiiiiiissssshhhh kind of like an ocean, very very mild static but I heard it. Is it defective? When I tried with some earphones, I didn't hear it, at least I dont think. I tried it with 2 different ipod earbuds. I was just wondering if it was normal that when you're not playing any music to hear stufff...I also heard the hard drive a bit or something that was moving thru the earbuds. Thanks!!

You'll be okay and it shouldn't affect anything as long as the system is off. That is one good thing that Dell does. They build their systems where you can change your optical drive at a moments notice. I had a classmate that bought the 3.5 floppy drive and CD/DVD drive, and he would just change it out when he needed it.
Not sure about the sound....there was one system that had a design flaw and the sound was always buzzy because of interference, but Dell was going to fix it this summer with the bios update. I'll see if I can find it, and post it.
Congrats by the way...hope you like your laptop

THanks for the reply.
The sound isn't "buzzy" it's kind of like shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh really low, but still audible.
In fact,I tried an interesting thing ; I changed the driver from the one it comes with (some weird company) to the Intel audio driver, and the noise stopped ! ! Well, it was considerably reduced, almost inaudible. I also changed teh registry so I could mute the microphone, which helped.I got all this from teh forum at dell.com Right afterI did this, there was no more hissing sound, but for some odd reason my wireless card stopped working! I enabled the "intel" user interface and got it to work. Also, by accident, I stuck the headphone jack into the microphone jack and it made a weird sound. Did I break anything?
And one more thing, while I was installing the drivers, the fan came on and very hot air came out, it almost burnt my hand. I'm so worried...lol.
I would really like to format it , since all this extra stuff comes installed that I don't need. There's no XP cd! How do I do it, SouthernGirl

that's good. I can't remember what system it is (memory decided to go since I'm starting summer school [ ]), but there is one of the Inspiron's that all the users have complained of the same thing...buzzy sound when using headphones
There are a couple of options so you can do a clean install...if you haven't erased it yet, there is a burn program called Dell Recovery CD (or something like that). Its under start-->programs-->one of the dell folders. It will allow you to make burn one copy of OS, and you can use it to do a clean install. If you go this route, make sure to burn your drivers (located under the dell folder on your c-drive) because the drivers are not included in the burn program and it takes a few hours to download them from Dell.
If that isn't there, you can call Dell and request them to send you the CDs (there will be 3 in total). You'll have to tell them that the Dell Recovery program isn't there. They might suggest for you to use ctrl+F11, but don't do this. It will only reinstall your system to the first day you got it with all the junk.
If you plan on changing out your HDD, then you can tell them that. I had to get them cause windows wouldn't boot up. Problem is that Dell does not send the CDs unless they see that you absolutely need them, so as a last resort some people have had to lie to get them.

Mine didn't come with the drivers cd. There was a couple of blue cds but they were for extra stuff. If one of the CDs say drivers on it, then you can just use it [ ]

LOL, you aren't an idiot. There have been several people that done the same thing (including me [ ] )
Here is what you do....goto this site on the PC that you are using right now and choose which operating system you are using (its already set for the 700m)
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19
Then download your network card drivers (either wireless or ethernet...both will work). You can either burn it to a CD or use a jumpdrive to transfer it over to your 700m. Then install it, and you should be able to access the net. From there you can download the rest off the same site.
I would go with A04. Always go with the lastest drivers for bios and chipset. Others you can get away with until they stop working (like sound, display, etc).
