    Hello all,

I recently got my 700m and I notice I always see a safely remove hardware icon in the taskbar on the lower right.

When I check it out, it tells me I can safely remove my cd/dvd burner. The device works fine, but I am curious to know why the safely remove hardware icon is always active.

Sorry I am new to the notebook world and could use some help.

    Thanks

This is probably a modular bay: it can be mounted and removed by "hot swapping" mechanism, the mechanisn you describe. My Inspirom 8200 has the same function.

Yes the optical (DVD/CD-RW) drive on the 700m can be removed at any time, even if the machine is running! Why that icon is always there, i'm not sure but I wouldn't worry to much about it. As long as it isn't causing problems or errors than I suppose try to ignore. Or clean out your system tray if you can of programs that are running which you don't use. Dell loads their machines with a lot of useless (some useful too) software which most people remove upon first boot-up.

thanks for the replies... i was planning on reformatting, but i became skeptical after reading a post about losing wireless and volume indicators, which i like

i removed all programs i do not want and unchecked alot of proggies under msconfic, startup

it starts alot quicker and shutsdown quick too, so i am happy

    thanks again

Yeah, if you don't feel you need to format, don't do it . But remember, there's a lot of stuff hidden there that really is slowing down your system, and by formatting, you'll notice a nice speed increase. Enjoy your machine!

I love taking my 700m to work and taking out the drive even when the machine is on. The 700m may not be a sleek machine in looks but everyone totally loves the screen on it and the size.
