My 700m runs pretty hot. Anyone else have the same problem? I had it reformatted and installed xp pro. I have wifi on and i just leave the laptop on with the cover closed, and it gets hot.
I feel like it was cooler before I installed XP pro, but then again, I didn't use it long with the factory settings.

it's highly unlikely that an OS/software change will make your notebook run hotter. either you're using your notebook longer / using it on an unrecommended surface (bed, carpet, etc.) / or stressing out the CPU, HD, or vid card.
or you are going slowly insane -

Maybe when you installed the OS the default power changed from "Home/Office Desk" (runs CPU at full) to "Portable/Laptop" (runs the CPU at lower speed)?

My 700m ran really hot until I upgraded the ram from 256 to 768.

based on what huma is saying then, if you have more RAM you'll be paging the hard drive less and making it work less -- which saves on battery and saves on heat. So if your memory is 512MB or below you may want to think about upgrading it. There are several things that can be done to reduce heat buildup, running the processor at a slower speed to working in an air-conditioned environment are just a couple of obvious quick solutions. I would never buy a cooling pad for such a small computer, that'd be ridiculous, just tweak how it runs.

I know the reason of why it's hot...you must have been using the laptop on some sort of padding like a matress or your lap. If you put it directly on top of a foam like substance , it will get hot because the air doesn'\t circulate as well. The above is true for all laptops. However, if you put it on a table, where it's supposed to be, it doesn't run hot at all, even when on all day.
