I am going to order a 700m but the one thing that I am not sure about is the hard drive. It looks like the 700m only comes with 4200 rpm hds. My question is how much of a performance hit will I get with a 4200 rpm drive vs a 5400rpm drive? I could order it with the smallest cheapest hd and then buy a new 5400 rpm drive and install it. Also does the slower hd affect the battery life considerably? Is replacing the hd difficult on this particular model? Right now I am sorta leaning toward just getting the 80gig 4200 rpm drive and just living with it, although I do plan on adding more ram from crucial.
    Thanks

You should actually get the 5400rpm, not 4200rpm. :) Dell upgrade their HDD a couple of months ago, but has yet to update their website to reflect the changes.

In the event you want to replace your HD, its not hard to do. Dell has instructions on their site, and it will guide thru everything. It is best to get your RAM from somewhere else since Dell is more expensive than most other stores.

I would get a cheapest one, and spend the difference on buying the biggest/fastest and use it in the external caddy for my storage needs, or switch them (same cash more space).

PS: The "slower" drive suppose to have less battery impact, but has about 30% performance hit from 5400, in the real world you will not feel it much though, boot up/program start only ones that you will notice and it is not by a big time (even though it is nice to have a quicker one) :budget:

I've heard bad things about the 4200. Supposedly, it's very slow. Get the 5400 - but I really though they all had 5400's? Great choice btw, it really is an excellent machine!
