This is a brand new system, barely two weeks old.

I've searched and read through the threads and posts on all of the screen issues and have narrowed down that my screen is a Samsung.

No problems when viewing in subdued light, but in the daytime, everything gets a really hazy, white fog over it. It loses its crisp clarity. The viewing angles are also horrendous.

I have spoken with Dell to document my concerns and have obviously been given the option of an exchange. What is not so obvious to me is how I should proceed with the exchange.

    1. Can I specify what screen manufacturer I want, or at least which one I categorically do NOT want?
    2. Should I stick with matte? Are these problems only with the Samsung screen, or will I have horrible angles and washed out colours in daylight with the other manufacturers too?
    3. Should I just go for True Life? If so, are there issues with manufacturers of that screen too and should/can I ask for a specific one?

    I really appreciate the advice.
    Thanks.

you cant specify, there have been a few posts of peole who say they have, but thats after multiple exchanges, usually you'll get the first one they see off the shelf, the exchange will be for what you have allready, if you have a matte wxga, you cant just say give me a wxg+ truelife, if you want to switch out parts you will need to return your system for a refund and order a new one with the parts you want

    Iceman, thanks for the explanation.

Just to reinforce my decision of going with the matte screen, I took my notebook over to Costco to do a side by side comparison. Let me point out again that most of my use will be during daylight hours and many times in the presence of a lot of that daylight. I don't play any games on my laptop (desktop - sometimes). The side by side comparison convinced me in under one second that I want to stay with matte. The image on the True Life was crisper and the viewing angles were better, but the reflection was quite umm... present.

I think I'm going to put some effort into trying to get a "anything but Samsung" screen (preferably LG). We'll see how it goes.

    Slight off-topic:
Other than the screen so far, I am really enjoying my 640m. My battery life is still very healthy, unlike many other reports here. Perhaps it's the software which people load that makes the difference - antivirus, firewall, CPU optimisers, and the like? Me, aside from your typical apps like browser, winamp and personal business apps, the only thing I have running at all times is NOD32. I've been saying for years that it's the lightest AV and will not change my mind any time soon. I am also not super obsessed with firewalls. I am comfortable using the built in XP one. So, perhaps therein lies the difference in battery life?

Zander, were you able to get an LG screen? I received my E1405 today and was so disappointed in the screen I started searching the 'net. I verfied my screen is Samsung, which seems to be the problem.

I went to a Dell kiosk before my purchase to see these TrueLife screens and decided they weren't for me. I also wanted the lower resolution since it'd be easier for me to read. I'd like to stick with the matte, but the picture is really really dark.

Other than the screen, very happy with the laptop. I sprung for the Intel A/B/G wireless, and the reception is unbelievable. I was using the laptop with no problems at work in known dead zones, and once I took the laptop home discovered 6+ neighbors' wireless networks. The wireless reception is really remarkable.
