Is there any advantage to the wireless options Dell provides for the 640m besides the N spec ones? Is the default card a decent wireless card for G use?
Dell Wireless 1390 Mini Card (802.11b/g, 54Mbps) [Included in Price]
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps) [add $10 or $1/month1]
Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n Dual-band Internal Wireless [add $50 or $2/month1]
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N [add $20 or $1/month1]

that's the one you want. best bang for buck -
But if I'm not concerned with N right now, is there any advantage? I'll be using B and G for the msot part for some time I suspect.
-
If you don't plan on upgrading to 'N' anytime soon then the basic built in wireless card is fine for you. But for only $20 more you are future proofing that particular part of your notebook. So it conclusion don't bother purchasing any other card if you have no desire to change the type of routing.

is it possible to upgrade later?
when I ordered mine I forgot about it. and took the one included -

the dell 1390 is junk.
avoid it at all costs.
shame on dell for selling such crap. -
You're not future-proofing with draft N, since it's just that, draft. It might work when N is finalized and it might not. Unless they have some guaranteed trade-in program if there are problems, I wouldn't mess with it.
Don't mess with draft hardware. -
I agree with schnikies, after you pay the extra for the so called "draft n" you may discover a few months down the road that it is not compatable with the final n.
BTW dell miniwireless card works great. I have it on my new laptop never had a problem with it... -
