    Hey everyone,

I am not sure if I just didn't notice before, or because I am away at school now and it's rather quiet....but does anyone else's 640m/E1405 Hard Drive click every so often?

Just wondering if this is normal with this model or all models?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Yes, mine clicks like that. It happens when the drive parks the heads. If you have a tool that shows you the SMART data for the drive, you can see the Load_Cycle_Count value going up by 1 every time it clicks. (I use 'smartctl' under cygwin.)

Under Linux you can make it stop by disabling the power management for the drive using 'hdparm -B 255'. Don't know how to do that under Windows, though.

It shouldn't be a problem, really, although the drive is only rated for a max of 600,000 Load_Cycle_Count.

Don't worry about it, its pretty normal. On my notebook, it clicks all the time, but much less when idling. Nevertherless, it still clicks.
