    Is this normal

    idle 54/55c 0% load.

fan kicks in after a while of it being at 55-57. When it reaches 40/42 fan goes off, but it quickly returns to 54/55. and cycles through it again.

    Room temperature is 27c

using notebook harware control, i tryed core temp and its identicle readings as core 1.

EDIT: What are the load temps? 55C idling with no fan seems pretty good to me...

Is it normal for the fan speed to go up and down so often?

The acpi temp is always higher 57 ish.

I've never measured my temps, but I've NEVER had any over-heating problems with my 6400 (specs below) in the 2 years I've had it. As long as it isn't sitting on a bit or carpet, it should be just fine.

Set video card clocks to a lower value in ATI PowerPlay if you don't need maximum performance for 3D applications. GPU and CPU share the cooling system, when the GPU gets hot il also heats up the CPU. With video card X1400 set to "maximum battery". CPU idles at ~50 C and the fan stays OFF. GPU set on maximum performance CPU idles ~54 C.
