I had to replace the MB in my 6400 and did not wipe off / add any of the thermal compound on the heat sync / chip. I think it might be running a little hotter now than it did before. I did not bench it before the MB blew, but now it sits around 50 C idle and the peak is 73 C with just web browsing and email. Should I tear it back apart and try to get a better connection on the chip and sync ? May try a game or dvd to see if it gets any hotter. Proc is a 1.83.

I think that's pretty high. I could be wrong. Are you sure you have the CPU fan connection properly connected?

The fan seems to work. The fan comes on , guess i could have it faced the wrong way. Though it seemed like it only fit one way. I guess I can check on that when I pull it apart again. Can anyone post their temps for the 6400 / 1505 .. or point me to a post with someone who has posted it. I didn't have much luck with google.

    Thanks

I took it apart and looks like the fan is on correctly. It seems to come on. .. Cleared the original compound and put some arctic ceramique on it. So far maybe running a few degrees cool .. 46-48 at idle. Any other suggestions. Or is this about right for this laptop.
