I'm gonna buy a laptop soon, most likely the inspiron 6400/1505, and I'm wondering if dell will come out with a new model to replace the 6400/1505 anytime soon? I would hate to buy it now and see a new model come out for the same price next month. Thanks in advance.

come to think of it, it is almost that time for dell to announce new models, and case styles, since the current chassis on all their laptops is pretty much 2 years old. Im hoping they go the direction of the xps m1210 in teh design

6400 came out sometime around June of last year... I would expect them to run at least a year out of it before a redesign.

I'm guessing they will release a new model with Intel Santa Rose notebook platform. Processor is scheduled somewhere around April, most probably new models will follow one or two months later.

It will be certain that there will be a Santa Rosa update across their entire product line when Intel launches it officially (Q2 of this year), however, I wouldn't bet on the chassis design being different.

Dell has a habit of using the same basic chassis for 2-3 years or for at least 2-3 generations of hardware. For the 15"/15.4" sized Inspiron, we have had the following:

Black boxy casing (~2000 to 2003)
    - Inspiron 8000: Intel Pentium III-M (with 100MHz FSB)
    - Inspiron 8100: Intel Pentium III-M (with 133MHz FSB)
    - Inspiron 8200: Mobile Intel Pentium 4-M

Silver widescreen casing with blue trims (2003 to 2005)
    - Inspiron 8500: Mobile Intel Pentium 4-M
    - Inspiron 8600: Pentium M (Banias); Centrino "Carmel"

Silver widescreen casing with "white bumpers" (2005 to current)
    - Inspiron 6000: Pentium M (Dothan); Centrino "Sonoma"
    - Inspiron 6400/E1505, v1: Core Solo/Duo; Centrino (Duo) "Napa"
    - Inspiron 6400/E1505, v2: Core 2 Duo; Centrino Duo "Napa Refresh"

It's only been a year with the latest casing design, so, I doubt we'll see one until the end of this year the earliest. I'd say we should expect a new case design for the Inspiron lineup by the time Intel launches their 45nm "Penryn" chips near the end of 2007.
