Hi guys,
I am seriously thinking about installing 64 bit ultimate on my m1530 but I have a few questions first.
1. Are ALL the drivers for the dell xps m1530 available for 64 bit vista?
2. Will programs that are 32bit, for example office and games run slower in 64 bit vista than in 32 bit vista?
3. Is it stable enough to run JUST 64 bit vista on the m1530 as I don't have a large enough hard drive to dual boot (160gb and i have 60gb left).
Cheers.
P.s. i have 2gb ram at the mo but will probably upgrade to 4 in the future.

2) no
3) Yes -
If you go the Dells' software/hardware support drivers for the m1530 there's no option for Vx64 OS, only Vx32. The programs will still run but in x32 mode. You still get the other benefits of x64

I would think you need 64-bit chipset drivers though...?

Hi - I plan to do this once I can get an M1530 with a T9300. I've looked into it a bit. Try this link from the Dell forums, and the link where the guy blogged how he did it. Might be useful. Good luck! Michael

Thats interesting, and I might even try it, but just because drivers are available doesn't mean everything will work the same. Many apps are written and tested for the 32-bit drivers. The 64-bit setup is far less tested. Running the 64-bit vista will very likely increase the odds of crashes and application bugs.

guys i have a serious problem, everything works except for the graphics drivers, i have the 8600m gt gddr3, so everything is in vista basic, help!

Probably a dumb question, but what's better about Vista 64 bit?
-
Support for 4Gb of RAM and increased performance when taking advantage of 64-bit applications with a 64-bit system (such as the C2D).

Vista x64 is like having more lanes for traffic flow. Instead of 32 lanes you have 64 lanes in which your data will flow. It's more secure because in order for a true 64bit program to work it has to be truly digitally signed. Support of greater than 4gb RAM. The problem is it won't work with much older 16bit programs and hardwares. This is after all supposedly an advance OS so it had to shed it's former self to run faster. But unfortunately software/hardware developers are not in a hurry to write programs for it because they claim it not financially feasable. We have faster CPUs (dual/quad cores) and yet we can't use it's full potential. You can read the advantage at the MS site. For ordinary computing where most of your programs are x32 you won't really notice much performance difference.
