I noticed when I got my new laptop that the C drive says I have 52.1 GB of total space and 44.2 for free space. I configured this 6000D laptop with a 60 GB 7200 RPM hard drive so why does it tell me out of the box that there is only 52.1 GB for total space? Shouldn't it be 60GB for total space and then subtract the pre installed software?

Most hard drives never have as much space as they say. The larger they are the more they are missing. It is probably about the same percent on all drives. My i6000d had 3 partitions and 2 of them being small. I deleted them when I reformatted for a clean install. Now it says 58Gb.

There is probably a hidden recovery partition which takes the extra space. That is how my Thinkpad came with a 40GB hard drive and 35Gb of space. there was a 3GB hidden partition. I had to turn it off in the bios. Fdisk would not see it.
