    I was wondering if it would be wise to buy a 600m now or wait for a newer model to come out. I can wait till probably mid fall before needing a new laptop. I know that in europe the 600m's have been gone for a few weeks now. I was wondering if anybody had some insider information on a new upgrade to hte 600m and when it should be expected to be out. Will it probably be with the new sonoma or alviso chips?

    There will likely been a refresh this year, but it will not come with the news chips, nothing will ship with Alviso this year.

    Dell was one of the first to offer the Radeon X800 X16 in desktops, so I would be surprised if they weren't the first with Sonoma chipsets. I know one thing pretty sure: When they put sonomas in notebooks, they will make them new models.

    How often does Dell introduce new models? I am actually looking for a ultralight with CD-RW/DVD player internal and hope the Dell will have one soon.

    The only ultraportable I know of with an optical drive is a Sony, which is very expensive.

    GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120

    To the original poster, if a new laptop is not an immidiate need, then I would wait. I currently hae a 600M and it does me very well. I would upgrade only if there were signifiant changes (not just CPU and GPU changes - show me that fuel cell :) )

    the 700m, which will be out in 2 weeks or so, will have a 12.1" widescreen, with sxga resolution, at least a pentium m 1.4ghz processor (not sure on voltage), an internal cd bay, and will have thickness and weight in between that of the 300m and 600m.

    ...sounds perfect to me. if it's not too expensive, i'll be returning my 600m for it.
