The bottom of my new 600m gets quite hot to the touch after just a little use. Is this normal? Any way to limit this?

Also it seems to be heavier than they told me it would be.

    No buyers remorse yet... but...

Chances are, that's the memory which is getting hot. I know with my 8600, the area where the memory is gets so darn hot, it's uncomfortable. It's probably similar on the 600.

Unfortunately, I do not know of a way of cooling that part down. The 5150 memory area comes with a cover that has vents in it, I wish other Dell's had the same.

Interesting. I'm worried that after a little use, it will start to melt or at least degrade the parts inside the computer. Does this happen?

I am not sure how much room there is in the laptop memory holes, so I do not know if this is possible. but you could theoretically install a very slim (GPU size) fan in there, and wire it up to a power source. put some holes through the memory cover and you got yourself an active cooling system.

needless to say, your warranty goes out the window..

Well, let's hope that Dell tests and designs their computers with these warm temperatures in mind!!

I have the 600m and yes it does get hot on teh bottom at times. I find that it gets hot for one good reason, running it for a long time in a place where the fans do not get enough fresh air. I can run it the whole nite and it is only sightly warm, but if I stick it on my sofa and do not have much airflow around it, then it gets hot. Usually, it starts on the left corner where the HD is and the heat moves down.

My suggestion to you is to get a can of compressed air and clean out your vents. Then make sure that you stay in well vented areas. If you still find that it is getting hot, notify Dell that you are having abnormal heat and see what they can do to accomodiate you.

I have to 600m with the dothan 1.8. I wonder if it is the fast processor that makes this thing heat up. It can get to hot to touch with my hand for more than a couple of seconds. As long as I'm wearing pants though, I can make it last on my lap. I am worried, however, about the type of damage this heat could do to the computer itself. Should I be looking out for anything. Is this type of damage covered by warranty + complete care?

Which area exactly gets too hot?

    Dell's warranty should cover you.

The warrany does cover you. Just make sure to note what you are doing when you feel the heat as they will ask you that, adn will probably want to repeat it.
