    Got a new 600m today.

    Initial impressions:

    - Build quality -
Ok to good. I don't think it's anything special. Lots of plastic, but really nothing special or bad to report about.

    - Keyboard -
I've used an old Sony VAIO notebook and a Compaq X1000 before, and I had nothing to complain about those, so I thought I was choosy about keyboards, but I am wrong, starting with this 600m. I now know what "flex" is. You can see the keyboard bending downward with each key depress. It wouldn't be so annoying by itself and I wouldn't have really noiced it if not for the fact that this cheapness in the keyboard build results in a loud clackety clack as I type. As a matter of fact, it seems the whole chassis makes a sound as I type.

    - Touchpad -
Others have complained about the touchpad is flimsily attached too. And I can confirm this. It depresses too much for some reason. I have read other people putting a piece of cardboard underneath, but in my opinion, this is not acceptable for a $1,000+ product.

The two click buttons are fine. Nice amount of feedback.

    - Style/Appearance -

It's a fairly sharp looking laptop for being a Dell. It's fairly light too. Definitely lighter than my Compaq X1000.

    - Miscellany -

I haven't figured out the weird hibernation/suspend profiles yet...one time the monitor turned off and I couldn' get it back on without a reboot. It's actually annoying me, but maybe I'm just used to my x1000 right now.

I haven't commented on the performance of the machine because I really don't have anything to say for the specs (1.6 dothan, 5400rpm 40gb {YES...THE 40GB UPGRADE IS A 5400RPM DRIVE! THEY MAY TRY TO TELL YOU OTHERWISE, BUT MINE SHIPPED WITH A HITACHI 5400RPM}, etc.) The speed is responsive and the wireless works well.

So, basically, I am not the happiest with the machine right now...it's not the quality I expected for the price I paid. Yes, I may nitpick too much...but I think I enjoyed my X1000 more, even though it was 1.5 pounds heavier.
