I have had my Inspiron 6000 Pentium M for 6 days. The fan has started to make a light whining/whistling sound.

Dell has promptly offered at home repair or to have the notebook sent back for exchange.

What do the Dell veterans advice?

Repair or return? I would rather do the on-site repair if it is good and if the process in not likely to damage the notebook in other ways.

First, go out to your local Staples and get a can of compressed air. You know, one of those little handheld things. Then turn your notebook off, turn it upside-down, and spray a few bursts of the compressed air into the intake and then the exhaust. Do this in short bursts to get the most possible dust out of there (there is a lot of dust from the factory and transportation to your house). Then aim the can so that you can get the fan to spin around a couple of times (you'll hear it).

Oh, and just make sure you hold the can as level as possible. If you don't then that white junk will come out. To fix that, just leave your laptop alone for 10 minutes and it should completely dissapate.

If the fan continues to whine after this (which it shouldn't), then I'd personally go with on-site repair if you have it.

I don't think you need to return it just yet. The on-site repair is usually fairly good from what I heard. You should be able to schedule an appointment with in the next couple of days. If you still have the problem after the tech repairs it, then contact Dell about getting a replacement.
