Are the benefits that noticeable? Is a cheap 7200 going to still have slower seek time than good 5400 or no? Is it worth getting a 7200 to replace 5400? I might get a 7200 and put XP on it then have to HDD's and 2 os's or a 7200 external with xp on it....havent decided yet just want to know how much better it is

The 7200's are better up until the 320 gig wd that came out. Apparently it has better data density, so only a 2ms difference in seek. It is more expensive, so a 100gb 7.2k drive will serve your purpose. If you are going to do an external either via esata or usb, then the 7.2k is your better bet as you can get some high caches. There are a bunch of great budget 7.2ks perfect for a Buffalo esata enclosure.

This might give you a good idea on how much of an improvement 7200 gives. Those results basically translate to faster file access, transfers, etc. Which then translates into faster boot times, loading times [in games], etc.
