I had a bit of a revelation today to share.

my xps m1330 clocked in at 4123 using 3dmark03. I noticed some scaling artefacts during the tests so I disabled flat panel scaling in the nvidia control panel.
my score has now improved 50% to 6219!

This means if you've got scaling enabled and you're not running at 1:1 rez with your display then you're incurring a massive performance loss.

my lesson for today is DISABLED SCALING and live with some tidgy black borders. Gaming is sooo much better.

A 50% improvement in rendering performance is significant regardless of how you measure it.
Would a car performance increase from 100kph to 150kph be any more/less if you consider it as 60mph increase to 90mph?

While you may not care for the measurement system the 3dMark03 result was intended to be an objective view on how much the improvement was.

The improvement is evident in games where you disable scaling.

I'll do some 3dmark06 scores once it's downloaded and the tests have run.

btw 3dmark03 scores are for the standard setup including a resolution of 1024x768. This incurs scaling where anything rendered at 1280x800 won't.

this is relevant to games that don't offer 1280x800 and you're force to run at odd resolutions

    This is what I get

    3DMark06 (Intel 965GM gfx card): 567

    3DMark06 (NVIDIA 8400M GS gfx card): 1298

    PCMark05 (Intel 965GM gfx card): 3409

    PCMark05 (NVIDIA 8400M GS gfx card): 4611

    Specs of my VGN-SZ61WN/C:

    • T7500 2.2GHz Intel Core2Duo
    • 2GB DDR2 RAM
    • Hybrid gfx (Intel 965GM and NVIDIA 8400M GS, 64MB)
    • 160GB Hybrid HDD
    • Windows Vista Business (32-bit)

Running the latest NVIDIA 169.09 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

I have heard that the 128MB 8400M GS gets about 1328, so I'm guessing his will be the same

Interesting, never thought the scaling effected thing. I disabled it just for the hell of it. True or untrue. I ain't got any block boarders either. It's exactly the same.

    Neat stuff, +rep

That 3DMark score seems REALLY low for the 8400. I didn't think it was that much slower than the 8600.

its not really low for an 8400M GS! have a look in the following link, and you'll see its average...

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

    On that site the 8400M GS scored 4549 in 3DMark03, 2607 in 3DMark05, and 1328 in 3DMark06

On the same site the 8600M GS scored 6737 in 3DMark03, 4165 in 3DMark05, and 2445 in 3DMark06

What is this hybrid gfx that you have? Can all m1330's switch from the integrated gfx to the nvidia? That would be great because I'm not gaming all the time and would love the increase in battery life.

The Sony Vaio SZ'd have both the 8400GS graphics card and Intel's X3100 integrated graphics in it. You can switch between either one to get more power or more battery life. To switch, you have to reboot the computer.

well after going through 2 M1330's and messing about with Dell and running up £30 worth of phone bills I decided the extra money for the SZ was worth it seeing as I wont have problems with it!

Look around at sites like Newgg.com, you can get an SZ for less than you think.

Sony has much higher quality products than Dell. Sony doesn't tend to be cheap which as a result ends up with a higher cost. But such is well spent if you have the coin.

However I own and xps m1330 and this is why.

The differences other than price specs wise? The sony has 1gb less ram and a smaller hard drive.
