Hoping someone can help with a question I have...

I recently took delivery of a new Dell laptop. The laptop uses an ATI 8730M gfx card which has HDMI out.

Now, I have plugged the laptop into my TV via the HDMI and I get video fine. The TV is connected via spdif to my AV amp and when watching TV or anything that outputs 5.1 surround, it works perfectly.

However it appears the laptop is only outputting stereo audio, not 5.1.

Does anyone know how I can get 5.1 to through my laptops HDMI out?

    Thanks

    Hi simoran,

HDMI automatically detects the capabilities of whatever device you connect it to. I suggest you to connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the AV receiver and then connect the TV to the HDMI out. The receiver should output 5.1 audio, if the video content played on the laptop has 5.1 audio content.

Please let me know the system model and the software used to play the videos, so that I can check the details and provide further assistance if you experience the same issue.

Again, you may be able to disable 5.1 (unlikely) via your sound software. If so, verify that its switched to 5.1/surround.

As above, the 5.1 is native to HDMI. Provided you have the devices that can pass and process 5.1.

Keep in mind that not all content has 5.1 (in fact most do not); although some receivers may offer a faux 5.1/surround. Your receiver may also be capable of switching this off/on, depending on the number of speakers, and configuration.

BTW, is there some reason you're still using obsolete optical? If your receiver has HDMI port, us that directly from your computer.

It should work since 5.1 should be automatic through HDMI.

everything since the old 4XXX series from AMD has supprted 5.1 over HDMI so it will work. are you sure that the source material is 5.1 and that your receiver is able to work with said video card? Some receivers do not like audio passed from certain cards.

    1) What player are you using on the laptop?

    2) Are you using CCCP Project code pack and Media Player Home Classic?

    3) If so run the CCCP settings app in your start menu hit LAV Audio Settings and under Bitstreaming choose the formats your receiver can use.
