I think I've spent over 10 hours reading every available thread on this subject, trying everything that anyone has ever suggested, in order to have my Studio 15 with ATI 3450 graphics send 5.1 spdif over HDMI to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver.

I've had a Dell technician remote to my computer for 1½ hours installling drivers, changing settings etc with no apparent solution in sight. He's now working on this and will get back if he finds something out. I will share my findings in this thread.

So, basically no success at all so far.

My simple question: has anyone had any kind of success transmitting 5.1 sound to a receiver over HDMI with their Studio laptop? (If so, pls share your experiences and your setup).

I have my receiver connected to a Panasonic plasma screen with HDMI. Picture works like a charm and I do get 2.0 PCM sound. The whole idea for me is to get 5.1 surroud sound pass-through to my receiver from Vista Media Center. To make sure it's not my receiver or TV casuing problems I have tried 5.1 pass-through using a stationary DVD player and it works fine.

Okay, found a solution in another forum:

    1) download the HD Audio Codec Driver from Realtek
    2) use Ac3filer and enable "Use Spdif". Also check "AC3/DTS" in "Spdif passthrough".

    That's it! :D

    Hi There,

I am in the same situation as yourself, and have been greatly upset to see that my Dell Studio 1535 doestnt support the standards I had come to expect from a system boasting HDMI and Blu-ray (I'd compare it to buying an Aston Martin with a Nissan Micra engine)

I was wondering which driver you downloaded from Realtek and why you needed this?

Is your system now able to send DTS etc through to your AV receiver? I have a brand new Sony STR-DA5300ES which supports all the latest standards

    James

With this solution will I assume I will be able to use the TV speakers?

Also, will I be able to use VLC Media Player to watch videos with sound using this solution or does it only work with certain media players?

If anyone knows I'd appreciate it.

    don't use VLC
    use MPC with CCCP

but yes this solution should work with all media players.......as long as the source video has sound which is encoded for DTS...and the player supports this...VLC does, and so does the solution above, which is WAY better than VLC

I have also spent countless hours with Dell and they are clueless. I also tried to download the realtek codec and it seemed to install, but I don't get the icon in the system tray and can't access an area where I can make checnges and choices. Any help would be appreciated.

I installed the ATI HDMI codec, 2 different versions. Does this allow PCM to pass or just DD/DTS
