So I'm sitting here with my shiny new Vostro 1400 that I received from Dell 5 days ago when out of nowhere, it straight up blue screens and shuts down.

I was not running it hard, it was plugged in... it was powered on out of hibernation for about 10 minutes on my lap, running only Firefox, Msn, and an online poker program. I can't imagine it overheated even though it was on my lap.

The programs I have thus far installed: Firefox, Msn, Players Only Poker, Itunes, Vistaglazz, and LogonStudio Vista. I've been having trouble figuring out the latter two and messed up some display settings yesterday, but can't imagine they had anything to with this.

Does anyone have ANY idea what this was, if this has been happening with these models, and if I should exchange/return while I can??

    thank you!!
    - Derek

Well if i'm not mistaken , Dell's return policy is valid for 21 days.
So you can still send it back.

I've recently stopped the crashes plaguing my system and I pinpointed it to MSN messenger. Either don't run the program or set it to XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode to minimise crash chances. It seems the stackhash error it causes can cause major stability problems.

Is this specific to Vista? Had it been doing to you exactly the same thing? I've always run MSN Messenger fine and dandy on XP SP2, and the previous 4 days and today, have run fine on Vista Premium for me. Do you know if this is a common occurrence?

    Any other ideas as well?

are these bluescreens repeating ???...bluescreens are usually due to hardware driver problems (rarely due to hardware failure also...). u havent talked abt ur further reboot attempts. have u installed any drivers other than u got from dell

    here are ur options

    1. boot in safemode and try disabling drivers using msconfig
    2. reinstall OS

    3. return the PC

IMHO - exchange it. Dell has a great cross shipment return policy in first 21 days. Might as well get it exchanged with a new one while you can.

So far this has only happened once, last night. I was shocked and did not bother getting the 0x000000000 code...

Why the heck would this only happen once and not since?

I have not installed any drivers...thinking... yeah, pretty sure no drivers. Unless you guys know anything about VistaGlazz or LogonStudio Vista causing problems, as thats the only software I'm inexperienced with that I've installed. Which wasn't running at the time.

So I'm thinking I'll ride out until the last day of the 21 day policy before I exchange, to see if it happens again. If it does not, still think I should?

ive got the same problem, and its happened about 5 times. i called dell and they walked me through something that worked for awhile, but its recently started doing it again, although not as much. i dont know if the problem is related, but for some reason whenever i play a game i get alot of stuttering, even though my hardware is more than adequate. i also get alot of stutter when watching videos on battery power

I can't help you but I have been getting a blue screen regularly on my dell and it states that windows did not shut down properly. THen something pops up that says Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. Says that McAfee causes the problem, then says that I need to update McAfee. WHen I check no updates are needed or available on McAffe.

I hope you figure this out...

I have had the same exact problem with my HP dv9720 running vista home premium. I use Mcafee provided by AOL. I called tech support at McAfee and they said they had a fix for the problem but they couldn't help me because they couldn't bring up my account info via aol email address. They directed me to customer service to "fix" my account info. After holding for one hour customer support said they couldn't help me fix my account info because they couldn't bring up my account. So much for their fix! (I now hate them!). I went ahead, and for reasons unknown, decided to change the power off button from "hiberbate" to "shutdown". I don't know what exactly made me do that but I haven't had a single blue screen since nor have I gotten a single error message about an improper windows shutdown or anything blaming anything on Mcafee. Who knew??
