So I had my first accident when I dropped a 1000+ page text book on my e1705. The "K" key went flying some where and the "F11" key is very loose now. I am hoping there is no internal damage but who knows. I have accidental care and I was wondering if anyone with experience getting the keyboard fixed can tell me how it goes. Will I need to ship my laptop somewhere?

While I haven't personally had any problems, my friend said he got a new keyboard when he sent his laptop in originally for a screen problem.

I think Dell will replace your keyboard without any hassles. But you will probably have to ship it to them or something. I'm not sure about that.

Call them, they will just ship you out a new keyboard with instructions and tools to replace it. Then you will ship back your old keyboard in the same box. My brother had a key break over the summer.

As I have another thread going on in here (which is now talking about the service) -

If you want, you can simply send the laptop computer to DELL and they will diagnose it thoroughly (!) and replace ANY minor/major parts they feel need to be replaced.

Mine was soaked in water and haven't powered on since then. As water spills void the warranty they still gave me a decent $400 deal for the whole repairs!

You seem to be covered for everything. Give it to them and they will do it well and if you yell at them - will do something better additionally to keep you smiling :)

I would recommend asking them to ship a keyboard, it's not a tough thing to do and keeps the laptop in YOUR posession, always a good thing. I would recommend that you use Dell Chat rather than a phone call to talk with them, you seem to get a better result.

Yea I have the accidental care...well mines called complete care so I assume its the same. I spilled coke all over my laptop a week or so ago on a friday. At first when I called them they went through a procedure to fix the keyboard, but seeing how your keys are broken, they might just send you a whole new keyboard, its pretty easy to pop off the plastic panels to reinsert them, but just doing use alot of force cause they are plastic and will warp the edges.

Anyways my computer was far worse, internal damage, it would boot to the black and blue dell screen then go grey, so the following tuesday they shipped me a box, shipped it out and within 5 days they shipped it back to me.

"The parts replaced was palmrest assembly, touchpad, LED board, switch board, LCD suspend switch, multi-media board. The entire palm rest and keyboard assembly was replaced as liquid was spilt on it."

So you really dont got to worry, I would have been going nuts if I didnt have this complete care package, thankfully I did, and dell replaced everything that needed replacing, My HD supposedly is okay, but we will see when i pick it up on monday (missed the purolator dude)

    Anyways best of luck.
