This really blows...I ordered a 6000 which is coming today...I could have gotten the 60gb 7200 for the same price as I was paying for the 80 hard drive now that they are offering it since only recently...which I assumed to be 5400 from what people said on other forums and in reviews posted on this very website until I began to read that people are actually getting 4200rpm drives too!
How can this be? The spare parts page lists ONLY 5400 drives are available for the Inspiron 6000 at the moment! Look for yourself.

ACK! Any idea on how I can upgrade my drive when I get my notebook today? Should I complain to Dell for sending a 4200 drive to me instead of a 5400rpm drive and hopefully get a concession coupon? Is there a better price to get a faster drive for my Dell notebook??? How can I get out of 4200 hard drive heck with the least effort and extra cash or should I just suck it up and wait till 7200rpm notebook drives become so common that they will be really cheap?

how do you check your RPM speed? It didn't tell me the specification when I was ordering one. I just chose 40 cause i plan to use an external HD.

If you didn't already notice it, today's NotebookReview news story announces Hitachi's 7200rpm 80GB & 100GB Hard Drives. You might want to see how much they are and if they're compatible with the 6000. (I'd be curious myself).

I received my I6000 on Wednesday and it has a Toshiba Mk8026GAX (which is 5400).
You should be ok!

I'm not sure if the 40GB HD will be 5400 or 4200! You can check to see which one you got by doing the following, and then froogle (google) your disk drive to check its speed.
Start -> Control Panel -> System (you may need to switch to classic view to see System) -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Then look under Disk Drives and Google it to see its speed.
When I reformated XP and was installing the drivers they had updates for a different brand of HD's so I think there are different one's they use.
Hope this helps
