I'm looking to get a Dell XPS 1330 originally with 4 GB of RAM. But after reading somewhere that anything above 3 GB RAM on a 32 bit system is not going to work? Is Vista Home premium a 32 bit system and shall I just buy 3 GB of RAM? Or is it able to utiilize all 4 gbs?

It can only use 3.5gb . To use more you have to use a 64bit OS.

It utilizes 3.3 or .4 or somehwere around there. Yes it's 32bit and yes you should save some money and buy 3 gigs.

But if money is no object, then go for the 4GB to future proof your system. Plus, you get 300-400 more megabytes in 32 bit Vista than just 3GB.

Or better yet, to save a lot more money, buy your system with the minimum amount of RAM, and then upgrade it to 4GB yourself. I did mine for $60 total. RAM is very cheap these days, and Dell overcharges way too much for it.

Yeah don't buy dell ram. check out newegg, I got 4gb of gskill ram for like 80 bucks. Not bad at all.

Man I remember the days when if you had 8MB of ram in your computer, you were hot stuff..and each additional MB was like 100 bucks.

So what are the 64 bit OS's? Is there a special name for Vista 64 bit? How come dell doesn't offer it with the 1330? Does it function the same as a regular OS?

Newegg is the place to be. I bought my desktops PSU, RAM, and video card from there. Now my notebooks ram too.

You can find some darn good deals there if you check every so often...I got a 2gb corsair flash drive from there for less than 10 bucks if I remember right.

I dont' believe Dell sells 64 bit Vista with the 1330. You have to buy it retail.

Dell doesn't sell any 64-bit systems, or at least in their home and home office department, they would get too many people need support, and Dell would get calls all day long and it would be too much for them to handle and therefore they do not carry 64-bit systems..

32-bit system can recognize up to 3.5GB of RAM which is pretty good amount..

Just to clarify, and not to hijack: If I ordered an m1530 with 4GB of RAM, and Vista Home Premium, they're gonna send me a 32-bit OS? If so, that's a tad disappointing.

Second question: I have a Vista Home Premium 64-bit DVD here already because that's what I'm running on my self-built desktop - can I use that DVD to install a 64-bit copy of Vista, and then use the key from the 32-bit license Dell gave me? It should work...

SP1 should now say the total RAM installed, not the total it can use like before.

Yeah, I think Microsoft made a good move there to change that number to the actual RAM installed. The number it showed was sorta ambiguous anyways.

Plus, less people will freak out when they install 4GBs.
We all just have to face the fact that Computers are a consumer electronic product, and first impressions and first time perspectives are a huge priority now.
